Good Nutrition Starts Close to Home
GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The recognition highlights the people who work directly with communities, including Barangay Nutrition Scholars and city nutrition personnel. Shienna Mae Almeria of Barangay San Isidro was named Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar and City Outstanding BNS, putting the work of community-based nutrition advocates in the spotlight. City Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Lalaine Calonzo was also recognized as Outstanding City Nutrition Action Officer, while City Nutrition Program Coordinator Imelda Silvero received the Outstanding City Nutrition Program Coordinator award. According to Bombo Radyo Gensan, Calonzo received a PHP15,000 cash award and Silvero received PHP10,000 during the recognition.
Three Years of Keeping the Green Banner
Another notable recognition came through the Green Banner Seal of Compliance, which General Santos City received for the third consecutive year. The award recognizes continued implementation of nutrition programs and interventions, making it different from an honor based on a single activity or one-time campaign. The city was also recognized through the Regional Award for Innovative Service Deliveries on Eradicating Malnutrition, or RAISE, for initiatives using new approaches to service delivery. Together, the two recognitions point to both continuity and innovation in the city's nutrition work, while giving community nutrition workers a wider regional platform for their efforts.
A Citywide Effort Behind the Awards
Nutrition work rarely happens in one office or through one program alone, and the GenSan recognitions reflect that broader network. The Bombo Radyo report credited city nutrition workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and other stakeholders for contributing to programs intended to address malnutrition and promote residents' health and well-being. The recognition therefore offers a glimpse into the less visible side of community health: the people who help bring nutrition programs into barangays and keep them running over time.
