ORMOC CITY — This charming city by the bay is charting a bold course to establish itself as a premier sports tourism destination. With full backing from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), local leaders are building world-class infrastructure to draw national and international competitions.
A Growing Complex for Elite Athletes
On October 20, 2026, city officials inaugurated wall climbing, karate, and modern pentathlon facilities at Dominador Tan Ruins in Barangay Cogon. These venues join an impressive lineup of sports infrastructure that includes a boxing gym, BMX track, and a skateboarding park.
The city also developed rowing facilities at Lake Danao, where the PSC donated boats and assigned national team coaches. Additionally, a new multi-level dormitory can house 120 athletes, ensuring comfortable accommodations during training camps and major sporting events.
Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez emphasized that these facilities are designed for holistic development. The goal is to provide athletes with world-class training grounds while offering families and tourists a vibrant space for recreation and community engagement.
A Blueprint for Sports Tourism
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio highlighted Ormoc's potential during the 79th Charter Day celebrations. Addressing 1,500 tourism officers, he noted that Ormoc is the perfect showcase for sports tourism, blending destination appeal with exceptional hosting capabilities.
Gregorio pointed out that countries like Thailand and Vietnam successfully merge their sports and tourism sectors. He stressed that global events like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup prove that sports remain the world's biggest tourism magnets, driving massive economic benefits.
Uniting Associations for Grassroots Growth
National sports associations are already taking notice. Karate Pilipinas President Ricky Lim praised the city's initiative and donated new mats. He promised to bring the national team to Ormoc to train and teach the youth for free, ensuring long-term sports continuity.
Congressman Richard Gomez, president of the Philippine Modern Pentathlon Association, reiterated the mission to build a regional training hub. He noted that athletes can prepare for international competitions while the local community directly benefits from the influx of sports tourism.
Economic Boost and Future Hosting
The influx of athletes and events is expected to stimulate the local economy. Hotels, transport services, and small businesses anticipate growth as Ormoc attracts more training camps and national tournaments throughout the year.
Furthermore, Ormoc is being considered as a potential host for the Batang Pinoy 2027 National Championships. While awaiting official confirmation, this prospect underscores the city's readiness to stage major events and inspire young athletes.
Chairman Gregorio assured the city of PSC's continued commitment. He stated that with the dedication of Mayor Lucy and Congressman Richard, Ormoc will become a model for sports development and tourism in the Philippines.
