A Major Step for Bohol’s Swine Industry
BOHOL - The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, headed by Dr. Meydallyn Paman, reported the latest ASF situation during the Provincial Government of Bohol’s flag ceremony on October 19 at the Capitol Grounds. Reporting zero active cases marks an important point in the province’s ongoing livestock recovery efforts. For farmers whose livelihoods depend on raising pigs, disease control can help create better conditions for rebuilding herds and returning to more stable production. The milestone also reflects the continuing importance of veterinary monitoring and biosecurity across communities.
PHP15 Million Set to Help Rebuild
Recovery does not end when active cases reach zero. Bohol has an approved PHP15-million supplemental budget for the Initial Breeder Base Gap Closure Program, designed to help rebuild the province’s swine industry and support farmers as production recovers. The OPV is also continuing other programs, including meat safety inspections, artificial insemination services, livestock and poultry production support, and rabies prevention and control. Bohol has likewise maintained its Avian Influenza-free status, strengthening efforts to protect animal health across different parts of the agricultural sector.
From Disease Control to Food Security
A stronger livestock sector can mean more than healthier animals—it can also mean more secure livelihoods and a more dependable local food supply. Continued disease surveillance, responsible animal raising, veterinary services, and support for affected farmers will remain important as Bohol moves forward. The goal now is to turn a major disease-control milestone into lasting recovery. With farmers, veterinarians, communities, and the provincial government working together, Bohol can continue rebuilding its livestock industry while strengthening food security and supporting sustainable development across the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark.
