ILOILO — The gentle current of the Iloilo River is about to welcome a new sport. On August 21, 2026, the 3rd Iloilo City Paddling Festival brings the fundamentals of rowing to local athletes, teachers, and enthusiasts through a grassroots training clinic, exhibition events, and competition at the Iloilo River Esplanade.

A New Wave of Talent for Iloilo

The Philippine Rowing Association (PRA), in coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), has set its sights on developing rowing talent in the region. The program began its training clinic on August 17 at Iloilo National High School, introducing local teachers and students to the basics of the sport. Participants experienced both indoor rowing exercises and hands-on on-water training.

This initiative is designed to identify and nurture young talents who could one day represent the country. The boats used in the program were donated by the PRA with full support from the PSC. The donation provides a tangible platform for aspiring athletes to develop their skills and pursue excellence in the sport.

Strategic Location and Community Support

The PRA views Iloilo as a highly suitable setting for rowing. The Iloilo River Esplanade is a major recreational and tourism hub, already established as a venue for various water sports and activities. Its calm waters and accessible location make it an ideal training ground for beginners.

The event is led by Philippine Paddling Federation president Len Escollante, alongside local paddling clubs in Iloilo. Support comes from the PSC and the city government led by Mayor Raisa Treñas. This strong collaboration ensures that the festival has deep roots in the community.

A Nationwide Vision for Grassroots Sports

The introduction of rowing to Iloilo is part of a broader strategy led by PSC chairman Pato Gregorio. The goal is to establish regional training centers across the country, providing more opportunities for athletes outside Metro Manila. This approach aligns with the vision of bringing sports development closer to every Filipino.

The PRA is looking to establish a continuous grassroots program in the province. The long-term plan includes developing Iloilo into a Regional Training Center, similar to a program recently created in Cauayan, Isabela. This would cement Iloilo's place as a hub for water sports in the Visayas.

A Festival of Paddling Excellence

The 3rd Iloilo City Paddling Festival has attracted teams from across the country. Dragon boat teams from Manila, Iligan, Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Cebu, Calbayog, Aklan, Boracay, and Iloilo have confirmed their participation. The festival serves as a celebration of paddling culture and a showcase of athletic talent.

A presentation of the donated rowing boats and dragon boats will take place during the opening ceremony. PSC commissioner Matthew 'Fritz' Gaston will attend as the oversight commissioner for PRA. His presence underscores the national government's commitment to the program's success.

An Invitation to Witness History

For residents and visitors, the event offers a unique opportunity to witness the birth of a new sport in the city. The Esplanade will come alive with the energy of young athletes learning and competing. It is a chance to see the future of Philippine rowing take shape on the waters of Iloilo.
