PHILIPPINES — Cash remittances from overseas Filipinos reached $3.03 billion in August 2026, a 1.9 percent increase from the $2.98 billion recorded in the same month last year, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. The steady inflow continues to underpin household spending and domestic economic activity.
A Steady Rise in Cash Inflows
The latest BSP data shows that cash remittances for the first eight months of the year rose by 2.2 percent to $23.42 billion from $22.91 billion in the January-to-August 2025 period. The United States remained the top source of remittances, followed by Singapore and Saudi Arabia.
Personal remittances, which include cash sent through banks and informal channels as well as remittances in kind, also grew by 2 percent to $3.37 billion in August. For the eight-month period, personal remittances increased by 2.3 percent to $26.10 billion. These figures highlight the enduring role of overseas Filipino workers in sustaining the national economy.
Resilient Inflows Amid Global Headwinds
Union Bank of the Philippines chief economist Ruben Carlo Asuncion noted that the data reflects resilient inflows but at a more moderate pace due to softer deployment and global uncertainties. He emphasized that remittances have historically been among the country's most stable external inflows.
"With seasonal holiday-related transfers typically picking up in the fourth quarter, the BSP's 2.7% growth target for 2026 remains within reach, provided current trends hold through year-end," Asuncion said. His outlook offers a positive forecast for the remaining months of the year.
Supporting Household Consumption
The BSP stated that these inflows continued to underpin household spending and domestic economic activity. Remittances power a significant portion of domestic consumption, which is a key driver of the country's gross domestic product.
However, household consumption grew by only 2.8 percent in the second quarter of 2026, slower than the 5.2-percent growth seen in the same period last year. This slowdown underscores the importance of sustained remittance flows in supporting families and maintaining economic momentum.
The Backbone of the Economy
Money sent home by Filipinos working abroad remains one of the Philippine economy's most vital lifelines. The steady growth in remittances provides a buffer against external shocks and supports the financial stability of millions of households.
As the holiday season approaches, remittance volumes are expected to rise further, providing additional support to local businesses and retailers. The consistent flow of foreign exchange also helps stabilize the peso and bolster the country's foreign reserves.
A Testament to OFW Resilience
The August figures are a testament to the resilience and dedication of overseas Filipino workers. Despite global challenges, they continue to send money home, ensuring their families' well-being and contributing to the nation's progress.
The BSP and economic analysts will continue to monitor these trends closely in the coming months. The data serves as a reminder of the critical role OFWs play in shaping the country's economic landscape.
