BGC — The Philippines closed Tourism Month with a major global milestone, emerging as the seventh-fastest improving economy in the World Economic Forum's 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index. The country climbed eight places to rank 57th out of 110 economies, and Bonifacio Global City stands as a compelling contributor to this national achievement.

A National Leap with Local Champions

The Philippines posted a 5.5 percent score improvement between 2024 and 2026, tying with Morocco among the world's fastest improvers. The WEF classified the country among the ten largest non-high-income tourism economies, alongside China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Türkiye, Mexico, and Brazil.

Tourism Secretary Ma. Bernadita Angara-Mathay credited the collective efforts of the entire sector, from airports and seaports to local markets and cultural destinations. BGC and Taguig have made notable contributions across sustainability, connectivity, safety, and culture pillars that drove this improvement.

Building the Backbone of Connectivity

The Philippines posted dramatic improvement in ground transport and port connectivity, rising to 49th from 80th globally. Taguig sits at the center of this transformation through the Metro Manila Subway Project's Kalayaan Avenue and BGC stations, which broke ground in February 2026.

The BGC stations are projected to serve over 200,000 passengers daily in their opening year. Once the 33-kilometer subway system is operational, travel from Valenzuela to BGC will drop from 90 minutes to just 29 minutes. The ₱1-billion modernization of Market! Market! will reposition it as a major retail and transport hub.

Sustainability as a Shared Strength

The country posted its biggest gain in sustainability, rising to 29th from 64th globally. The Philippines ranked second worldwide in demand sustainability, with geographically dispersed tourism rising to 5.2 from 3.2 out of 7. BGC's private sector actively contributes to this narrative.

NEO Office PH, operating seven BGC buildings, targets further emission reductions as tenant demand for green workspaces grows. Daiichi Properties earned triple LEED certifications for three BGC properties. Enderun Colleges and Sun Life Philippines transitioned their BGC campuses to 100-percent renewable energy through First Gen.

Safety and Culture Driving Confidence

The Philippines advanced in safety and security, moving to 73rd from 93rd globally. Taguig contributed by consistently recording among Metro Manila's lowest index crime rates, with only 30 cases in early 2026. The DILG also deployed 800 tourist police officers, with BGC among initial rollout sites.

Culture and heritage posted the largest score increase among 17 pillars, rising 43 percent since 2019. Taguig celebrated heritage through the Regional Festival 2026, while BGC hosted the Modern and Contemporary Art Festival and continues its Art Mart through December. The Pinoy Playlist Musikahan runs October 17-18.

A Model for Urban Tourism

BGC's 15-minute city design combines pedestrian-first planning, mixed-use development, and world-class amenities. This has positioned the district as a leading destination for business, commerce, and international events. Its emergence as a MICE tourism center reinforces Taguig's role in the national landscape.

The Philippines' rise in the WEF index reflects a collective effort across the archipelago. BGC and Taguig represent one engine among many, demonstrating how sustained investment in infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and cultural programming strengthens a nation's global tourism standing.
