Cebu — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officially launched the 2026 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) for Central Visayas on July 13, 2026, at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. The event, which runs until July 15, serves as a high-level showcase of how cutting-edge technology and innovation can be directly applied to address real-world challenges in public service, business, and community development. Led by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., the opening ceremony brought together national and local leaders, including Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro and Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano, to reaffirm their commitment to a more competitive and resilient region through science-backed governance.
Harnessing AI and Future Industries for Local Growth
A primary focus of this year's RSTW is the responsible and practical application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and government service delivery. Rather than focusing solely on global high-tech trends, the DOST is championing AI solutions that prioritize ethical use, data privacy, and human oversight, ensuring these tools are truly beneficial to the Philippine context. The exhibits also feature the "NEXT LEVEL: Game Development Challenge," which showcases locally-developed mobile games centered on smart cities, food security, and disaster response. These initiatives reflect a broader goal: to bridge the gap between researchers and the public by demonstrating how digital innovation can foster cultural promotion and public awareness while opening new doors in the creative industry.
Strengthening Infrastructure Through Drone and Smart Tech
In a significant move to modernize regional operations, the DOST officially launched the "DRONE Central Visayas Industry Development Action Plan." Secretary Solidum highlighted the agency's dual priority of developing Filipino-made drone prototypes—such as lightweight, durable models—and integrating their use into disaster monitoring, construction, and agricultural sectors. Alongside drone technology, the event showcased the progress of the "Smart and Sustainable Communities Program," which now includes 124 participating local government units (LGUs) nationwide. By moving away from expensive, internet-reliant "smart city" models and toward practical, problem-solving tech roadmaps, the DOST is helping LGU leaders institutionalize long-term development plans that remain effective regardless of changes in local political leadership.
Building a Competitive and Resilient Cebu
The RSTW serves as a dynamic networking hub, connecting technology developers with businesses, universities, and government agencies to accelerate the adoption of local innovations. Exhibits at the event range from fuel-cell technology and electric vehicles to 3D printing and advanced research outputs, all designed to improve productivity and regional competitiveness. Governor Baricuatro emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that the provincial government remains a staunch supporter of DOST initiatives that bolster food security and innovation. By fostering this ecosystem of shared resources and validated problem-solving, the 2026 RSTW is successfully transforming scientific research into tangible benefits for the people of Central Visayas.
