PHILIPPINES — Three Philippine retail brands have earned spots on the inaugural Brand Conviction Index: Asia's Top 100 Retailers, outperforming many larger regional and global competitors. ShopSM, Penshoppe, and Bench were recognized by Inside Retail Asia on September 29, 2026, for building deep consumer trust across Asian markets.

A Triumph for Filipino Brands

The ranking, published by Hong Kong-based Inside Retail Asia, measured consumer conviction rather than mere size or sales. This metric assesses the willingness of consumers to recommend a brand, revealing future growth potential. Over 70,000 consumer interviews across 11 Asian markets informed the list, powered by YouGov BrandIndex data through May 31, 2026.

ShopSM led the Philippine contingent, ranking 80th overall. The online extension of The SM Store recorded nearly four times as many consumers recommending the platform as those currently shopping there. Inside Retail Asia noted that ShopSM shows how a deeply embedded physical retailer can translate familiarity into digital conviction.

Penshoppe followed closely at 83rd, with nearly one-third of surveyed Filipino consumers already shopping with the brand. An even larger share recommended it, signaling strong advocacy. Bench rounded out the Philippine entries at 92nd, recognized for its mass-market appeal and extensive store presence.

How They Beat Regional Giants

The three homegrown brands ranked alongside Asia's retail elite, including Rolex, JD.com, and Flipkart. ShopSM outperformed many established Asian chains through its integration of physical and digital retail. Delivery and click-and-collect services linked to SM's vast footprint make the platform accessible and reliable.

Penshoppe and Bench surpassed numerous international apparel labels, reflecting fierce local loyalty. Inside Retail Asia described Penshoppe's advantage as cultural fluency combined with mall visibility and attainable style. This creates a mass-market fashion identity that feels current and unmistakably Filipino.

For Bench, the publication credited its ability to translate Filipino identity into a recognizable everyday retail experience. Its extensive store network and accessible e-commerce give shoppers multiple reasons to return. Both brands demonstrate that local knowledge can compete with global scale.

Why Consumer Conviction Matters

The Brand Conviction Index measures the gap between current customers and those who would recommend a brand. Inside Retail Asia argues this metric is more commercially important than traditional size-based rankings. Brands with high conviction can acquire customers efficiently and defend market position effectively.

For Philippine retail, the inclusion of three homegrown brands signals growing regional competitiveness. ShopSM's digital transformation shows how legacy retailers can evolve. Penshoppe and Bench prove that homegrown fashion can hold its own against international imports.

The top of the Asian ranking was led by Swiss watchmaker Rolex, followed by JD.com and Flipkart. Shopee, Cartier, Louis Philippe, Hermès, Fairprice, Omega, and Wellcome completed the top ten. The presence of Philippine brands in the top 100 highlights the strength of local consumer trust.

A Signal of Future Growth

The recognition validates years of investment in brand building, customer service, and market understanding. ShopSM continues to expand its online offerings across fashion, beauty, homewares, electronics, and groceries. Penshoppe operates over 500 stores with growing e-commerce operations. Bench maintains its position as a household name.

As Asian retail competition intensifies, Filipino brands are proving they can compete on trust, not just price. The Brand Conviction Index offers a roadmap for sustainable growth built on genuine consumer relationships. For these three brands, the future looks promising.
