GENERAL SANTOS CITY - The word “Padayon,” commonly understood as a call to continue moving forward, gives the initiative a fitting theme. Fishing communities deal with more than the physical demands of their work; they also navigate changing weather, livelihood pressures, market conditions, and the uncertainty that can come with working at sea. That makes wellness a relevant part of any discussion about the fisheries sector. In General Santos, this conversation carries particular significance. The city remains closely associated with tuna fishing and seafood production, while the local government and fisheries agencies continue supporting farmers and fisherfolk through programs and services. PADAYON places attention on the people behind that familiar industry.
Wellness Becomes Part of the Fisheries Conversation
The importance of wellness among fisherfolk is also reflected in the city’s broader activities for the sector. During the 2026 culmination of Farmers and Fisherfolk Month, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 12 joined General Santos City’s celebration, which included representatives from 26 barangays. The gathering featured an open forum on agricultural opportunities, distribution of agricultural inputs and garden tools, and a wellness day offering free health services to participating farmers and fisherfolk. These activities show that support for food producers can extend beyond production itself. Against this backdrop, PADAYON’s focus on wellness and resilience adds another community-based perspective to the conversation.
