SURIGAO CITY — The City Government of Surigao, through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO), joined the nation in celebrating Philippine Arbor Day 2026 with a tree planting activity at the Parang-Parang Watershed. The event was held in collaboration with the Surigao Metropolitan Water District, Philippine Ports Authority - Surigao, the DENR - Mines and Geosciences Bureau XIII, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and various mining firms. A total of 350 seedlings of Duyok-Duyok (Manilkara kauki) were planted to be nurtured, supporting the protection and conservation of the watershed area.
Protecting a Vital Water Source
The Parang-Parang Watershed is a critical water source for Surigao City. Presidential Proclamation No. 635 has declared the area a protected watershed, underscoring its importance for the city's water supply. The tree planting activity was part of a broader commitment to environmental conservation, forest restoration, and watershed protection through collaboration between local and national government agencies. Arbor Day, celebrated every June 25, serves as a reminder of the vital role that trees and plants play in sustaining a healthy environment. The date was institutionalized through Proclamation No. 643, which amended Proclamation No. 396 (s. 2003) to fix Arbor Day on June 25.
A Species Native to the Philippines
The Duyok-Duyok (Manilkara kauki) is a medium-sized to fairly large tree native to the southern Philippines, including Mindanao. It can grow up to 40 meters tall and is known for its straight, cylindrical trunk. The timber is used for heavy construction, furniture, and implements. The species is locally common in primary forests on clayey soil and limestone at altitudes up to 500 meters.
A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Future
The event demonstrated strong collaboration between the City Government of Surigao and its partner agencies in promoting environmental stewardship. Arbor Day was institutionalized through Republic Act 10176, or the Arbor Day Act of 2012, to promote tree planting and encourage greater public participation in environmental conservation for the benefit of present and future generations. This year's Arbor Day carried the local theme "Luntiang Bukas," emphasizing the importance of a greener tomorrow, while aligning with the broader national focus on climate action and environmental care.
