TAGUIG CITY — The Taguig Car-Free Streets initiative continued its weekly tradition on October 4, 2026, marking its 69th Sunday of transforming roads into public recreational spaces. The program encourages residents to embrace active wellness while exploring alternative transportation options.

A Growing Tradition of Open Streets

Since its launch, the initiative has expanded to include the EMBO barangays starting March 1, 2026. Five routes now host the weekly event: Cayetano Boulevard, C-5 Service Road leading to Taguig Ecopark, 11th Street P. Gomez to 19th Street A. Luna in West Rembo, Kamagong Street in Comembo, and Negros Street in Pitogo.

These routes close to motorized vehicles every Sunday from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM. The street closures create safe, traffic-free environments where runners, cyclists, skaters, and walkers can exercise without hazards. Families, seniors, and pet owners also enjoy the open spaces for socializing and play.

Free Activities for Every Interest

The program offers a wide range of cost-free activities. Residents can join running, walking, and cycling sessions, or participate in free bike lessons and maintenance workshops. Free bicycle rides are available for both kids and adults.

Wellness sessions include Zumba and Tai Chi, while outdoor sports feature badminton, sipa, and Chinese garter. Tabletop games such as chess, Scrabble, and sungka provide quieter recreation options. These offerings significantly lower the cost of active leisure for students, young professionals, and budget-conscious families.

A Student's Story of Gratitude

Fame Michaela Bigornia, 19, from Barangay Napindan, shared her excitement about the program. She said having space and equipment to explore different sports helps clear her mind after a busy week of schoolwork.

She thanked Mayor Lani for providing programs that give students opportunities to enjoy recreational activities without spending much. For students like her who budget their allowances carefully, the free programs offer valuable entertainment and stress relief.

Supporting Active Mobility and Community Bonds

The initiative signals Taguig's focus on pedestrian-friendly living, green spaces, and alternative transportation. By opening streets to people rather than vehicles, the city promotes long-term urban livability and stronger neighborhood connections.

Citywide coverage ensures residents across different areas have local access to open spaces near their homes. They no longer need to travel far to a central park. This accessibility makes wellness a convenient weekly habit rather than a distant goal.

An Open Invitation to Residents

The City of Taguig invites everyone to make wellness a weekly habit. Residents can join the Car-Free Streets every Sunday from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM at any of the designated routes.

Whether running, cycling, playing chess, or simply enjoying the open air, participants find a welcoming community. The initiative continues to grow, promising more Sundays of safe, healthy, and enjoyable recreation for all Taguigeños.
