DAVAO — The 24th Musikahan sa Tagum Festival is officially hosting the 2027 National Rondalla Music Competition. This highly anticipated event invites ensembles and vocalists from across the country to celebrate the rich tradition of plucked-string music and artistic excellence.
A National Stage for Filipino Heritage
The event, themed "Strings in Unity," provides a massive platform for artists to showcase their virtuosity. It promotes the continued development of Rondalla music in the Philippines, ensuring that this rich cultural tradition is preserved and passed on to future generations of musicians.
The competition specifically aims to preserve the unique sound of the Rondalla, a traditional Filipino string ensemble featuring instruments like the bandurria, laud, octavina, guitar, and bass. This initiative highlights the deep cultural heritage embedded within these harmonious instruments.
Diverse Categories and Generous Prizes
Organizers have designed various categories to accommodate different skill levels and group dynamics. These include the Rondalla Ensemble for both senior and junior divisions, Rondalla Quintet, Rondalla Solo, and Vocal Solo. Participants can join as school-based, church-based, family-based, or community-based groups.
A total cash prize pool awaits the most outstanding performers. The Senior Rondalla Ensemble champion will take home a trophy, diploma, and up to Php 100,000. Other winners across the junior, quintet, and solo categories will also receive substantial cash prizes and well-deserved national recognition.
The Road to the National Finals
The competition follows a rigorous three-stage journey starting with the Video Elimination Round. Interested groups must submit an audition video by November 25, 2026. They must perform a piece that does not exceed five minutes to qualify for the challenging next stage of the competition.
Following the eliminations, successful candidates will advance to the Semifinal Round, which also requires a video submission of a different piece. The ultimate test comes at the National Finals on February 17-18, 2027, at the City Hall Atrium in Apokon, Tagum City.
This multi-stage format guarantees that only the most exceptional and highly prepared ensembles will grace the final live performance stage in Tagum City. It pushes musicians to refine their craft and deliver unforgettable performances that honor Filipino musicality.
Boosting Cultural Tourism in Tagum
Hosting a national competition significantly boosts Tagum City’s cultural tourism sector. The influx of participants, their families, and music enthusiasts will drive foot traffic to local hotels, restaurants, and commercial establishments. The extended stay of these visitors will maximize economic impact.
Beyond the economic benefits, the event reinforces Tagum’s reputation as a vibrant hub for arts and culture. By welcoming musicians from all over the archipelago, the city fosters a strong sense of national unity and shared cultural pride among diverse communities.
