MAKATI CITY — Three Philippine retail brands have secured places in the inaugural Brand Conviction Index: Asia’s Top 100 Retailers, a ranking released by Hong Kong-based Inside Retail Asia on September 29, 2026. ShopSM, the digital commerce platform of SM Retail, led the Philippine contingent at 80th, followed by fashion brands Penshoppe at 83rd and Bench at 92nd. The recognition highlights a growing truth in Philippine retail: consumer trust, not just size, is becoming the defining measure of a brand’s strength.

What the Brand Conviction Index Measures

Unlike conventional rankings that focus on revenue or store count, the Brand Conviction Index measures the gap between a retailer’s current customer base and the share of consumers who would actively recommend it. The ranking was built on more than 70,000 consumer interviews across 11 Asian markets, drawing on twelve months of YouGov BrandIndex data through May 31, 2026. This methodology places brands with deep consumer advocacy ahead of those with merely large footprints. Inside Retail Asia described the index as the first independently verified ranking of retailers in Asia based on consumer conviction.

ShopSM Leads with Digital-Physical Integration

ShopSM’s 80th-place finish reflects a striking level of consumer advocacy. Nearly four times as many surveyed Filipino consumers said they would recommend the platform as those who currently shop there. The platform extends the SM Store’s physical retail experience online, offering delivery and click-and-collect services linked to its nationwide network of stores. In Makati, SM’s retail presence is anchored by the SM Store at Ayala Center, a landmark that has served shoppers for decades. The seamless connection between physical locations and digital channels demonstrates how a legacy retailer can translate familiarity into digital conviction.

Penshoppe and Bench Champion Filipino Style

Penshoppe, ranked 83rd, reached close to one-third of surveyed Filipino consumers, with an even larger share recommending the brand. Inside Retail Asia noted that Penshoppe’s advantage lies in cultural fluency, mall visibility, and attainable style that resonates across different regions. Its Glorietta branch in Makati remains a familiar shopping destination within the Ayala Center complex.

Bench, at 92nd, was recognized for its extensive store presence, accessible e-commerce, and broad product range. The brand’s flagship store at One Ayala in Makati earned the Store Design of the Year award at the Retail Asia Awards 2026, praised for transforming a high-traffic transit hub into a lifestyle destination. Bench’s ability to remain relevant across generations has made it a household name that consumers continue to endorse.

Why Consumer Conviction Matters for Makati’s Retail Landscape

The presence of three Filipino brands in Asia’s Top 100 signals that local retailers can compete on trust and advocacy, not just price or scale. For Makati, a city that serves as a showcase for Philippine retail, this recognition reinforces its role as a testing ground where homegrown brands refine their identities and build lasting relationships with consumers. As competition across Asia intensifies, the brands that earn conviction today are positioning themselves for sustained growth tomorrow.
