MANILA, Philippines — Toshiba Corporation is set to expand its production capacity in the Philippines through a multi-billion-peso investment over the next three years, generating around 3,000 jobs. The plan was discussed in a meeting between Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go and Toshiba COO Koji Ikeya.
A Major Boost for PH Manufacturing
The expansion will strengthen the country’s position in global technology supply chains, according to the Department of Finance. Toshiba’s investment focuses on increasing its nearline hard disk drive production capacity. These high-capacity drives serve data centers facing growing storage demands from cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.
The move is expected to deepen local supply-chain linkages and develop Filipino talent. It also expands higher-value manufacturing activities in the country. Government officials see the investment as a vote of confidence in the Philippines as a destination for advanced manufacturing.
Expanding Nearline HDD Production
NL-HDDs provide essential storage for data-intensive technologies. The planned investment builds on Toshiba’s more than three decades of manufacturing operations in the Philippines. The country serves as a major production base for the company’s global HDD business.
This expansion allows the Philippines to capture a larger share of global demand for high-capacity data storage. It also reinforces the country’s capabilities in advanced electronics manufacturing. The investment is expected to create quality jobs and strengthen the industrial base.
Government Support and Reforms
Secretary Go assured Toshiba of the government’s commitment to facilitating the investment. He cited the CREATE MORE reforms as key to attracting long-term investments. Representatives from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority joined the meeting to express support.
Toshiba’s COO noted the company remains committed to growing its presence in the country. He praised the skills and dedication of Filipino employees. The government’s ongoing reforms aim to make the Philippines more open and competitive for investors.
Three Decades of Toshiba in the Philippines
Toshiba marks 31 years in the Philippines since establishing Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc. at Laguna Technopark in 1995. Operations began in 1996. Today, the company runs two major manufacturing facilities in Laguna, with its second site at Carmelray Industrial Park 1 in Calamba.
Its Philippine operations cover manufacturing and assembly of hard disk drives, enterprise solid-state drives, and advanced helium-filled HDDs. The company also provides engineering and design services, rework, and printed circuit board assembly. These activities position the country as a key player in advanced electronics manufacturing.
Building a Tech Ecosystem
The investment creates opportunities to deepen local supply-chain linkages and develop Filipino talent. It also expands higher-value manufacturing activities in the country. Secretary Go said the expansion reflects investor confidence in the Philippines as a destination for advanced manufacturing and technology investments.
Toshiba’s continued commitment reinforces the country’s standing in the global technology and data economy. The government’s ongoing reforms aim to make the Philippines more open and competitive for investors. This expansion is expected to generate quality jobs and strengthen the industrial base.
