PHILIPPINES — Vietnamese investments in the Philippines are expected to surpass $100 million by the end of 2026, according to Vietnamese Ambassador Lai Thai Binh. The announcement came during a reception marking Vietnam's National Day, highlighting the deepening economic ties between the two Southeast Asian nations.

A Growing Economic Partnership

Ambassador Lai revealed that Vietnamese companies have already invested more than $90 million in the Philippines, accounting for nearly 70 percent of cumulative Vietnamese investments to date. The two countries now aim to increase bilateral trade by 30 percent to reach $10 billion this year. Trade between the Philippines and Vietnam already reached nearly $8 billion in 2025.

Vietnam now ranks as the Philippines' 11th-largest trading partner. Vietnamese rice consistently accounts for about 80 percent of the country's total rice imports. Meanwhile, the Philippines serves as the destination for nearly half of Vietnam's rice exports, creating a mutually beneficial agricultural relatioAnship.

Enhanced Strategic Partnership Unlocks Opportunities

The economic momentum follows the elevation of bilateral ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership during Vietnamese President To Lam's state visit to Manila in June 2026. Ambassador Lai emphasized that this upgrade is not merely symbolic. It represents a real deepening of the close and special relationship between the two countries.

"We hope that the new partnership will contribute a lot, not only to the benefits of our two peoples, but also to the region," Lai said. The two countries are now working on a new plan of action to facilitate practical cooperation across several areas under the strengthened framework.

Creating Jobs and Strengthening Food Security

The surge in Vietnamese investments directly benefits Filipino workers. Expanding Vietnamese companies in sectors like electric vehicles, technology, retail, and services generate local employment in manufacturing, sales, logistics, and operations. These jobs provide new opportunities for skilled Filipino professionals across various industries.

Strong diplomatic and trade relations also ensure a predictable supply of Vietnamese rice. With this staple grain accounting for the majority of Philippine imports, the partnership helps stabilize prices for Filipino households. Food security becomes more attainable through reliable trade corridors.

Balanced Trade for Mutual Benefit

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Maria Andrelita Austria expressed Manila's commitment to achieving a balanced trade relationship with Vietnam. The government aims to expand two-way trade opportunities and improve market access for Philippine products. Reducing trade and investment barriers remains a priority.

This push opens doors for Filipino farmers, food producers, and exporters. Improved access to Vietnam's fast-growing market allows local goods to reach more consumers. The emphasis on balance ensures that both nations benefit from the economic partnership.

New Horizons for Filipino Workers

While Vietnam is not a traditional destination for semi-skilled labor, its rapidly developing economy creates demand for Filipino professionals. English education, corporate management, IT, engineering, and hospitality are among the sectors seeking skilled talent. The strengthened partnership facilitates better coordination for professional mobility.

The Enhanced Strategic Partnership also lays the groundwork for improved labor protection frameworks. Streamlined visa processes and stronger consular support benefit the Filipino community in Vietnam. These safeguards ensure that overseas workers are protected under clear diplomatic arrangements.
