A Service Caravan Brings Assistance Closer to Families

OZAMIZ CITY- The October 21 caravan gathered around 1,500 attendees, mainly from urban poor communities, according to the Department of Agriculture–Regional Field Office 10. Through its Provincial Operations Center in Misamis Occidental, the agency offered on-site agricultural consultations to help vulnerable residents learn about available agricultural livelihood services. The activity gave participants an opportunity to seek information directly rather than having to begin their inquiries through separate offices. This kind of service delivery can help families understand which assistance programs may fit their circumstances and livelihood plans.

Vegetables and Urban Gardening for Everyday Food Needs

Food support was another part of the Ozamiz observance, with the Department of Agriculture distributing approximately 100 packs of assorted vegetables, including cabbage, eggplant, chayote, and Chinese cabbage. The agency also provided printed agricultural guides containing information intended to support self-help and urban gardening. For households with suitable space, growing vegetables can offer a practical way to supplement meals, although the results depend on available land, water, and other resources. Combining immediate food assistance with useful growing information gives families both short-term support and ideas they may explore beyond the event.

Tackling Poverty Through Coordinated Community Services

The National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty is observed annually from October 17 to 23 under Presidential Proclamation No. 717, issued in 2004. Its purpose is to encourage coordinated action against extreme poverty and social exclusion, bringing together government agencies and other sectors to respond to the needs of disadvantaged communities. The Ozamiz caravan illustrates how agricultural consultations and practical food-related assistance can form part of a broader community response. Sustained progress, however, also depends on whether families can access appropriate follow-up services, develop viable livelihoods, and secure reliable sources of food and income.
