The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) presented its future plans for Subic Bay Freeport at the Tourism Congress of the Philippines meeting on July 30, 2026, at the Quest Plus Conference Center in Alabang . SBMA Board Member Migol Marcelo and the SBMA Tourism Department shared the zone's strategic direction, focusing on sustainable eco-tourism, modern infrastructure, and strategic partnerships to boost tourism and investments. This presentation comes as the Tourism Congress continues to serve as the private sector's consultative body to the government in shaping Philippine tourism policy, a mandate established under Republic Act 9593, the Tourism Act of 2009.
Sustainable Eco-Tourism: Protecting Nature While Driving Growth
The SBMA's presentation emphasized sustainable eco-tourism as a core pillar of Subic Bay's development strategy. This approach aligns with the broader global movement toward responsible travel that minimizes environmental impact while providing financial benefits to local communities . Subic Bay has long been recognized for its natural assets, including the 11,000 hectares of forest and the Pamulaklakin Nature Park, a reserve area established by the SBMA to supplement the income of indigenous communities . The Pamulaklakin Nature Park's name derives from a word for an herbal vine in the native Ambala language, reflecting the deep connection between local culture and the environment . By focusing on eco-tourism, the SBMA aims to protect these natural resources while creating livelihood opportunities for local communities, ensuring that tourism development remains inclusive and sustainable.
Modern Infrastructure and Strategic Partnerships
The SBMA also highlighted plans for modern infrastructure upgrades to support future growth and travel needs . These upgrades are seen as essential to enhancing Subic Bay's appeal as a tourism and investment destination, making it more accessible and competitive in the regional tourism landscape. The presentation emphasized that modernizing infrastructure is crucial for accommodating the expected increase in visitors and supporting new tourism-related businesses. Strategic partnerships with tourism associations and stakeholders are also part of the plan. The Tourism Congress of the Philippines, which hosted the meeting, provides a platform for such collaborations, facilitating dialogue between the private sector and government agencies to shape policies that promote sustainable growth and competitiveness in the tourism industry . SBMA's engagement with these partners is expected to help align Subic's development with national tourism priorities and open doors for new investment opportunities.
