ILOILO — The week-long Kape Ta sa Merkado concluded on August 28, 2026 with an awarding ceremony at the Iloilo Central Public Market. The festival, which ran from August 22 to 28, showcased local coffee talent and the vibrant potential of public markets as cultural and economic hubs.

A Celebration of Local Brews and Barista Skills

The event carried the theme "Energizing the Local Economy and Tourism in Public Markets," reflecting its dual purpose. It highlighted the skills of local baristas while drawing visitors to the newly redeveloped Central Public Market. The festival transformed the historic space into a lively destination for coffee lovers.

The Latte Art Competition recognized exceptional creativity and precision. Joel Servillon took first place, followed by Jayy'arr Layson in second and Kenneth Bryan Faulve in third. Their intricate designs demonstrated the high level of skill present in the local coffee scene.

Academic Excellence in Espresso

The Espresso Beverage Competition featured teams from educational institutions, fostering talent among the next generation of baristas. West Visayas State University claimed first place through the efforts of Stephen Poral and Kristal Jayme. Iloilo City Community College took second, while PHINMA University of Iloilo placed third.

These competitions elevated the standards of coffee craftsmanship in the region. They provided students and professionals a platform to showcase their abilities. The competitive spirit drew crowds and inspired participants to reach new heights.

A Platform for Homegrown Businesses

The festival brought together at least 24 local coffee merchants from across the city. Small vendors and passionate roasters shared the stage with established cafes. The event created a concentrated hub of culinary talent, allowing visitors to sample the best the region offers.

By connecting local entrepreneurs directly with consumers, the festival drove economic opportunity. It honored the farmers who cultivate the beans and the roasters who perfect the profiles. The message was clear: their work is valued and essential to the community.

A Legacy of Market Revitalization

Kape Ta sa Merkado is part of a broader vision for Iloilo's growth. The Local Economic Enterprise Office sees coffee culture as a key driver of foot traffic in public markets. This initiative turns a traditional commercial space into a modern community gathering spot.

The festival's success will be measured not just in sales but in lasting impact. It builds relationships and strengthens Iloilo's brand as a cultural and economic hub. As the city celebrates 89 years of progress, this event represents a bold step toward an even brighter future.
