ILOILO — More than 70 food vendors who will participate in the Fiesta sa Calle Real Night Market have completed a comprehensive Food Safety, Handling & Service Training. The initiative ensures that every delicious food experience at the upcoming event is also a safe one, aligning with Iloilo City's identity as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
A Shared Commitment to Food Safety
The training equipped participating vendors with essential knowledge on proper food handling, sanitation, safe preparation, and quality service. This proactive approach ensures that the three-day event upholds the highest standards of public health. By investing in vendor education, the city demonstrates its dedication to protecting both residents and visitors.
Organizers emphasized that every food space should reflect the flavors and traditions Iloilo is proud of, while also maintaining standards that keep the community safe. The collaboration between the local government and the vendors shows a unified commitment to excellence. It is a model for how cultural events can prioritize both heritage and public welfare.
A Festive Corridor of Heritage and Flavor
The Fiesta sa Calle Real Night Market, scheduled for August 28 to 30, is part of Iloilo City's 89th Charter Month Celebration. This year's edition carries the theme, "Celebrating Heritage, Community, Ilonggo Pride, Local Flavors, and Cultural Performances." The historic Calle Real will transform into a vibrant corridor showcasing the best of Ilonggo gastronomy and arts.
More than 90 kiosks operated by 63 confirmed vendors will line the street. Leny Ledesma, executive assistant and focal person for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, said the market will go beyond the usual street-food offerings. Local souvenirs, goods, and other products will also be available, offering a variety to visitors.
Beyond the Usual Street Food
The event is designed to be a multi-sensory experience. Cultural dances, 12 buskers, and a new aerial act by the Bereber Group will provide entertainment throughout the festival. Karaoke and a fiesta-themed photo booth have also been added to this year's attractions, ensuring there is something for everyone.
The focus on variety reflects the city's goal to elevate the night market beyond a simple food fair. It is an opportunity to celebrate local talent and homegrown businesses. The event serves as a platform for Ilonggo entrepreneurs to showcase their products to a wider audience.
Strengthening the Creative City's Reputation
Iloilo City's commitment to food safety is deeply tied to its global identity. As a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, the city must uphold stringent standards. The training program ensures that vendors are not just sellers but ambassadors of safe, quality Ilonggo cuisine.
Previous editions of the night market have already demonstrated strong economic impact. Seven runs attracted around 97,000 visitors and generated more than P11.5 million in sales. With 70 trained vendors participating, the city aims to sustain this momentum and build on its success.
A Celebration Rooted in Community
The event underscores the importance of collaboration between government, vendors, and the community. By working together, they create an atmosphere that is both festive and responsible. The Fiesta sa Calle Real Night Market is more than just an event; it is a celebration of Ilonggo identity, creativity, and shared commitment to quality.
