Davao — The city's thriving agricultural export sector has achieved another monumental milestone after premium fresh durian successfully landed in the Middle East via an initial trial shipment to Muscat, Oman. Facilitated by Engseng Food Products and backed by the Department of Agriculture in the Davao Region (DA-11), the consignment features renowned local varieties cultivated by Belviz Farm in Calinan. This strategic trade breakthrough opens an exciting new international market for Filipino farmers, building upon the phenomenal success of regional agricultural exports currently making waves across global trade hubs.

Executing a Strategic Trial Shipment to Muscat

The milestone consignment comprised 56 boxes of fresh Puyat and Duyaya durian varieties originating from Barangay Wangan in Calinan, Davao City, destined for the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Valued at approximately USD3,000 (around PHP183,000), the shipment was coordinated with Jeel Almaaly International following years of persistent trade discussions. Regional agricultural authorities highlighted that this initial market test paves the way for regular, large-scale commercial orders that will significantly boost local agricultural revenues.

Building on International Success Beyond Asian Markets

While China has served as a primary powerhouse for Philippine durian exports following historic trade agreements initiated in 2023, expanding into the Middle East diversifies the country's agricultural footprint. Regional Director Macario Gonzaga emphasized that international buyers are increasingly captivated by the distinct sweetness and creamy texture of locally grown tropical fruits. By successfully establishing a foothold in Oman, Davao producers are proving that Filipino agricultural goods can meet the rigorous quality standards demanded by discerning global consumers.

Empowering Local Smallholder Farmers Through Quality Standards

To sustain this exciting international momentum, agricultural agencies are urging smallholder farmers and orchard owners to strictly adhere to best practices in crop management and post-harvest handling. Maintaining uncompromised fruit quality and safety standards ensures that international trade partners remain confident in the reliability of Philippine agricultural exports. Through continued government backing, strategic private sector partnerships, and grassroots dedication, Davao’s agricultural community is securing a prosperous and globally recognized future.
