DUMAGUETE CITY — The National Museum of the Philippines–Dumaguete has unveiled "Katahum sa Negros," a special visual art exhibition celebrating the island's beauty and heritage. The exhibit, which opened on August 17, 2026, runs until September 28 and features works from ten talented local artists.

A Celebration of Island Identity

The exhibition is part of National History Month, adopting the theme "Hinubog ng Bayan, Dinuyan ng Alon" or "Shaped by the People, Cradled by the Waves." The title "Katahum sa Negros" translates to "The Beauty of Negros," perfectly capturing the show's intent. It presents a visual journey through the island's landscapes, history, and community life.

The showcase is a collaboration between the National Museum, Astras Art Gallery, and Artventurers, Dumaguete's active local art collective. This partnership ensures the exhibition is deeply rooted in the local creative community. It provides a platform for regional artists to share their interpretations of island life on a national stage.

The Art of Al Reymond Gonzaga

Among the featured artists, Al Reymond Gonzaga's works stand out for their emotional depth and social commentary. His oil paintings include "Rags of Riches," a piece that explores themes of wealth and poverty. "The Burden That Feeds Us All" similarly tackles heavy societal themes, inviting viewers to reflect on labor and sustenance.

His collection also includes "Where the Light Finds the Cave," a more intimate and spiritual piece. A separate work, "St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral in Dumaguete," connects the modern exhibition to the city's historic landmarks. These masterpieces are integrated with the museum's permanent galleries to create a unified narrative of the island.

Nine Artists, One Story

Beyond Gonzaga, the exhibition showcases the diverse talents of nine other local artists. John Paul Bantayan, John Mark Tuting, Cedric Gaitera, Joniel Fausto, and Daniel Intea are among the participants. The list is rounded out by Melfred Briones, Kenneth Flores, Sergio Cesar Bendijo, and Willy Deguitos.

Working in oil, acrylic, and graphite, these artists offer a multi-faceted view of Negros. Their works collectively tell a story of an island shaped by its people and cradled by the sea. The variety in mediums and styles ensures there is something to captivate every art enthusiast.

A Free Cultural Experience

The exhibit is open to the public daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Old Presidencia Building. Admission is completely free, making art accessible to all. The museum is located on Sta. Catalina Street in Poblacion IV.

Visitors are encouraged to experience these captivating details in person. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to connect with the soul of Negros Island through the eyes of its artists. It is a must-visit for tourists and locals seeking to deepen their appreciation of local culture.
