CEBU CITY — Mayor Nestor Archival and city officials welcomed the visiting image of St. Augustine of Hippo, affectionately known as Tata Usteng, at Cebu City Hall on October 14, 2026. The reception formed part of the historic pilgrimage from Tanza, Cavite, to Cebu.

A Centuries-Old Devotion Arrives in Cebu

Tata Usteng is the beloved patron saint of Tanza, Cavite, where generations of devotees have honored St. Augustine of Hippo through longstanding religious tradition. The venerated image is enshrined at the Diocesan Shrine of San Agustin and Parish of Santa Cruz in Tanza.

Historical and religious accounts trace the community's devotion to the image back several centuries. Devotees associate it with answered prayers and blessings, making it a powerful symbol of faith for generations of Catholics. Its arrival in Cebu marks a significant moment for local believers.

A Six-Day Pilgrimage Across Cebu

The civic welcome at Cebu City Hall formed part of the six-day itinerary of Tata Usteng sa Sugbu, scheduled from October 12 to 17, 2026. The pilgrimage brings the revered image to various churches across Cebu for Holy Masses, religious gatherings, and other devotional activities.

Before the City Hall reception, a civic welcome was held at the Cebu Provincial Capitol, led by Governor Pamela Baricuatro. The day's itinerary also included a Holy Mass at the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe earlier in the morning.

Other stops include the Cebu Archdiocesan Shrine of Saint Pedro Calungsod, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Minor Basilica of the Holy Child of Cebu. The pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude in Cebu on October 16, before the delegation returns to Manila on October 17.

Government Support Strengthens Community Ties

The Cebu City Government, under Mayor Archival, extended assistance to the visiting delegation to help facilitate the activities and accommodate the pilgrimage. This support reflects the city's commitment to fostering religious and cultural activities that bring people together.

The Tanza municipal government expressed gratitude to both the Cebu Provincial Government and the Cebu City Government for their assistance, guidance, and warm reception during the visit. Their collaboration ensured the pilgrimage proceeded smoothly and meaningfully.

Faith as a Unifying Force

The pilgrimage highlights the enduring role of religious traditions in bringing communities together. It also strengthens ties between local governments and faith communities through shared support for devotional activities. Such events remind everyone of the values that bind Filipino society.

For devotees in Cebu, the visit offers a rare opportunity to venerate an image deeply cherished by their brothers and sisters in Cavite. The shared experience of prayer and reflection reinforces the bonds that connect Catholic communities across the archipelago.
