PILAR, SIARGAO — On the rugged eastern coast of Siargao, a rare geological phenomenon transforms the shoreline into a hidden playground of turquoise pools and sculpted rock. The Magpupungko Rock Pools, located in the municipality of Pilar, are not a permanent feature of the landscape: they appear only when the ocean pulls back at low tide, revealing a fleeting world of crystal-clear basins carved into limestone and volcanic rock over millennia. This transient nature is precisely what makes a visit to Magpupungko feel like discovering a secret, as the pools remain submerged and invisible during high tide, only to emerge for a few precious hours each day.

The Artistry of Tide and Stone

The formation of Magpupungko is a collaboration between time and tide. Centuries of wave action have patiently carved the coastal rock into a series of natural basins, ranging from shallow, ankle-deep wading pools ideal for children to deeper chambers that plunge to depths of three to four meters. The water within these pools is remarkably clear, its turquoise hue contrasting sharply with the dramatic rock walls that frame it and the open Pacific beyond. The name "Magpupungko" itself is derived from the local word "pungko," meaning "to sit", a fitting description for a place where the receding tide seems to settle into the rock, creating pockets of calm water perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and even cliff jumping from the surrounding formations.

A Sustainable Approach to a Fragile Wonder

The uniqueness of Magpupungko has made it one of Siargao's most popular tourist destinations, but its popularity has also brought challenges. In early 2026, the local government of Pilar temporarily closed the site from February 1 to 15 to allow the area to recover and regenerate naturally. This "tourism holiday," mandated under Municipal Ordinance No. 014, series of 2023, is part of a broader commitment to ensuring that the site remains sustainable for future visitors. During the closure, tourism workers also received skills training focused on environmental protection and safety measures, reinforcing the principle that protecting natural wonders and providing quality visitor experiences can go hand in hand.

Practical Tips for an Unforgettable Visit

For travelers planning to experience Magpupungko, timing is everything. The pools are only accessible and safe for swimming during low tide, so consulting a daily tide schedule is essential before setting out. The drive from General Luna takes approximately 45 minutes by scooter or habal-habal, passing through scenic coastal roads. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy water shoes, as the rocks can be slippery, and to bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and a waterproof phone case. Arriving early, ideally as the tide begins to recede, offers the best chance to enjoy the pools before the midday crowds arrive. As with all natural destinations in Siargao, travelers are encouraged to practice responsible tourism by taking their trash with them and respecting the local environment and community.
