ILOILO — The National Museum of the Philippines – Iloilo has unveiled "Megalodon: Giants of the Sea," featuring two fossil teeth of Otodus megalodon discovered in Jordan, Guimaras. The exhibit opens in time for Museums and Galleries Month 2026, giving travelers a compelling new reason to visit the City of Love.

A Prehistoric Discovery in Guimaras

The specimens are the first documented megalodon fossils from Western Visayas, adding a significant chapter to the Philippine fossil record. They were discovered by Angelico Arellano and later deposited at the museum by him and Nereo Lujan. Their contribution ensures that future generations can study and appreciate these ancient treasures.

Visitors can view the teeth at the Geology and Paleontology Hall, open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 4:30 PM cutoff. Admission is free, making the exhibit accessible to students, families, and curious travelers exploring Iloilo's cultural offerings.

The Largest Shark That Ever Lived

Megalodon, whose name means "big tooth," was the largest shark species in history, reaching estimated lengths of 15 to 18 meters—roughly the size of two buses. As the prehistoric apex predator, it fed on baleen whales, sea turtles, and large fish in shallow waters circling the globe.

Its presence in the ancient waters of the Visayas offers a glimpse into the region's marine ecosystem millions of years ago. The exhibit presents this narrative through fossils, educational materials, and interpretive displays. Visitors leave with a deeper understanding of the islands' geological and biological past.

A Boost for Iloilo's Cultural Tourism

Museums and Galleries Month every October celebrates the country's rich artistic and historical heritage. The megalodon exhibit positions Iloilo as a destination where science, history, and tourism converge. It complements the city's existing attractions, from heritage churches to its renowned gastronomic scene.

Tourism stakeholders see the exhibit as a draw for educational tours, school field trips, and science enthusiasts. The National Museum's central location makes it easy to include in walking itineraries. Travelers can pair a museum visit with a stroll along Calle Real or a bowl of authentic La Paz Batchoy nearby.

Planning Your Visit

Guided tours may be arranged by messaging the National Museum of the Philippines–Iloilo Facebook page, emailing [email protected], or calling (033) 327 3782. Booking ahead ensures a smoother experience, especially for larger groups and school delegations.

The exhibit runs throughout October and beyond, giving visitors ample time to explore. Whether you are a local rediscovering your heritage or a tourist seeking meaningful experiences, the Megalodon exhibit offers a window into a world long vanished yet forever inscribed in stone.
