BACOLOD - The Department of Social Welfare and Development continues to strengthen disaster preparedness in the Negros Island Region by replenishing its emergency relief supplies with 120,000 family food packs. The shipment arrived at the agency's regional warehouse at Bredco Port in Bacolod City, significantly increasing the available food resources for communities that may be affected by natural disasters. The replenishment forms part of the DSWD's proactive disaster management strategy, ensuring that food assistance can be deployed immediately whenever emergencies arise. By prepositioning relief supplies in strategic locations, the agency improves its capacity to respond quickly and efficiently to the needs of vulnerable families.
Supporting Communities During Natural Disasters
The arrival of the food packs comes at a crucial time as authorities continue to monitor the ongoing unrest of Kanlaon Volcano alongside the effects of Typhoon Inday and the enhanced southwest monsoon. Several local government units in Negros Occidental implemented precautionary evacuations after heavy rains affected low-lying communities, with hundreds of residents temporarily taking shelter in evacuation centers. These relief supplies provide assurance that affected families will have immediate access to essential food assistance while local governments continue disaster response operations. The DSWD's warehouse inventory also serves as a ready reserve for neighboring cities and municipalities that may require additional support during emergencies.
Coordinated Response for Safer Communities
Beyond maintaining sufficient relief supplies, the DSWD continues to work closely with local government units, social welfare offices, disaster risk reduction and management councils, and other partner agencies to ensure timely and coordinated humanitarian assistance.
