Promoting Sustainable Waste Management in Bacolod
BACOLOD - The Negrosanon Initiative for Climate and the Environment (NICE) has encouraged the Bacolod City government to strengthen the implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, also known as Republic Act 9003, by adopting a more comprehensive zero-waste approach. The call came following the withdrawal of Victorias City's proposal to dispose of its residual waste at Bacolod's sanitary landfill, which renewed public discussion on the city's long-term waste management strategies. According to the organization, effective waste management begins with reducing waste generation, practicing segregation at the source, expanding recycling efforts, and promoting composting throughout communities. These measures are seen as important steps toward creating a cleaner and more environmentally responsible city.
Protecting Communities and the Environment
NICE also emphasized the need to address environmental concerns surrounding the Bacolod sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa. The group pointed to issues raised by nearby residents, including unpleasant odors, clogged waterways, flooding, and possible health concerns associated with improper waste management. It encouraged the city to continue improving landfill operations while giving priority to the welfare of communities directly affected by waste disposal activities. The organization likewise urged city officials to reject waste incineration and instead invest in sustainable practices that minimize waste generation and maximize resource recovery.
Building a Zero-Waste Future Through Collaboration
The organization stressed that achieving a successful zero-waste system requires cooperation among local government units, barangays, businesses, civil society organizations, and residents. NICE, together with its partner organizations under the Zero Waste Alliance–Negros Occidental, expressed its willingness to assist Bacolod through community education campaigns, waste segregation initiatives, composting programs, and other environmental projects. Such partnerships can help strengthen public awareness while encouraging greater participation in responsible waste management. By fully implementing existing environmental laws and promoting sustainable practices, Bacolod has the opportunity to further enhance its environmental stewardship and build a healthier, cleaner, and more resilient city for future generations.
