PRAGUE, Czech Republic — More than 1,500 overseas Filipino workers and their families converged at Sportovní hala Královka for the OWWA Cup 2026, a multi-sport tournament that seamlessly blended athletic competition with on-site government services. The two-day event showcased the vibrant unity and resourcefulness of the Filipino community in the Czech Republic.

Basketball, Volleyball, and Billiards Fire Up the Crowd

Sixteen men’s basketball teams and eight volleyball squads battled across two intense days, while 64 billiards players had already launched the competition on June 27. The tournament drew participants from multiple Czech cities, transforming the arena into a lively festival of sportsmanship and national pride.

The men’s basketball final delivered high drama as the Pinoy Hoopers defeated team Kadan with a decisive 75‑65 victory, capturing the championship trophy. The volleyball matches and billiards rounds further energized the crowd, with every spike and break drawing enthusiastic cheers.

Adding a cultural flourish, renowned vocalist Cipriano De Guzmán performed during the event, lifting spirits and infusing the tournament with a dose of home. The combination of sports, music, and shared identity created an electric atmosphere that resonated far beyond the court.

Government Services Open Right at the Arena

MWO‑Prague and OWWA‑Prague set up a full service caravan inside the venue, offering Overseas Employment Contract verification, OWWA membership renewal, and e‑Card processing. Workers who normally struggle to visit offices during weekdays found everything they needed between games.

Labor Attaché Llewelyn D. Perez, who heads MWO‑Prague, and Welfare Officer Emer Janette Bamba ensured the booths remained staffed throughout the tournament. Attendees also accessed one‑on‑one consultations on labor rights and welfare benefits, turning a sports event into a one‑stop public assistance hub.

Parents, young professionals, and first‑time OFWs lined up to update documents or seek advice. The seamless integration of services meant no one had to choose between recreation and essential errands, a convenience warmly appreciated by the community.

Bayanihan in Action: 100 Volunteers Power the Event

While OWWA served as principal sponsor, the tournament’s heartbeat came from over 100 dedicated volunteers and Filipino community organizations. They conceptualized the program, managed logistics, officiated games, and handled publicity, proving that the event was truly community‑driven.

Specialized committees covered secretariat, technical, program, and usher tasks, with volunteers working weeks in advance. Their on‑the‑ground coordination turned a simple tournament into a polished, large‑scale celebration that welcomed every attendee with warmth and efficiency.

Labor Attaché Perez praised the volunteer corps, noting that such partnerships between government and community groups are essential to reach OFWs effectively. The bayanihan spirit transformed OWWA Cup 2026 into a model of collaborative public service, where every assist mattered.

Leaders Celebrate Partnership and Athlete Success

Philippine Ambassador to the Czech Republic Eduardo R. Meñez graced the opening program alongside OWWA Deputy Administrator Rosalia Susana S. Bahia‑Catapang and OWWA NCR Regional Director Ma. Teresa Capa. Their presence underscored the government’s full backing of diaspora‑led initiatives.

Perez reiterated that meaningful collaboration expands the reach of migrant welfare programs. With basketball champions crowned, volleyball winners celebrated, and hundreds of transactions completed, the event left a lasting blueprint for how sports can serve as a powerful platform for public service and unity.
