DUBAI — Overseas Filipino Workers in Dubai hoping to bring family members or friends for a visit now face clear income thresholds set by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. The rules determine exactly who an OFW can sponsor based on monthly earnings.
Immediate Family Within Reach of Most Workers
OFWs earning at least Dh4,000 per month can sponsor first-degree relatives, including parents, spouse, and children. This threshold covers many mid-level workers in retail, hospitality, customer service, and office administration. For these workers, reuniting with immediate family is legally accessible and financially feasible.
Sponsors must hold a valid UAE residence visa and a valid Emirates ID. Proof of income is required through a salary certificate, an attested labour contract, or company ownership documents for business owners. These requirements ensure that only financially capable residents sponsor visitors.
Higher Income Needed for Extended Relatives
Sponsoring second- or third-degree relatives requires a minimum monthly salary of Dh8,000. This category includes siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles, aunts, and cousins. The higher threshold limits sponsorship of extended family to skilled professionals, engineers, nurses, supervisors, and management-level OFWs.
Applicants must provide evidence of the relationship through birth or marriage certificates, properly attested before submission. Additional documents include the visitor's passport copy, a passport-sized photograph, proof of accommodation, a return flight ticket, and health insurance covering the stay. These requirements protect both sponsor and visitor.
Friends Require the Highest Salary Bracket
OFWs sponsoring non-relative friends must earn at least Dh15,000 per month. This is the highest threshold under current GDRFA rules. The policy reflects the broader relationship gap between sponsor and visitor, ensuring that only high-earning residents extend invitations to friends.
Understanding this tier prevents OFWs from paying fraudulent agencies that promise guaranteed visas despite ineligibility. Knowing the official rules also helps workers avoid non-refundable application fees when they do not meet the legal salary requirement.
Fees, Deposits, and Documentary Burden
Single-entry visit visa fees start at Dh200 for 30 days, Dh300 for 60 days, and Dh400 for 90 days. A refundable financial security deposit of Dh1,000 is required, along with potential value-added tax, medical insurance, and service charges. These upfront costs demand careful budgeting.
OFWs must also submit proof of relationship documents attested by Philippine and UAE authorities. The Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines strictly monitors outgoing travelers, so an officially sponsored visa with complete documentation eases departure checks and reduces offloading risks at airports.
Preventing Scams and Financial Strain
Unscrupulous agencies often charge exorbitant fees for visit visa assistance, preying on OFWs desperate to reunite with loved ones. Clear knowledge of GDRFA salary tiers protects workers from these illegal fixers. Official applications can be submitted through GDRFA online platforms or authorised AMER Centres.
Family visits remain a priority for the Filipino diaspora. Setting realistic expectations before applying prevents financial strain and ensures that reunions happen legally and smoothly. The salary requirement is the first and most important factor in the sponsorship process.
