Testing Bohol’s Readiness for Earthquake Emergencies
BOHOL - Bohol strengthened its preparedness for potential earthquake emergencies as responders put their skills, coordination, and resources to the test through a mass casualty simulation. The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Bohol Chapter conducted its first earthquake-focused Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) simulation on September 3 at the PRC Building in Tagbilaran City. The exercise brought together emergency response organizations and local disaster management teams to assess their ability to work together during a large-scale earthquake scenario.
Responders Conduct Search and Rescue Operations
The simulation involved a scenario with more than 40 people inside a building, including 21 evacuated individuals and 28 reported missing persons. Responders carried out search and rescue operations and continued their efforts until all missing individuals were accounted for. The exercise involved the PRC, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Tagbilaran City DRRM Office, municipal DRRM teams, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bohol-Panglao International Airport Rescue Team, and a barangay representative. Their participation allowed the teams to practice communication, coordination, manpower deployment, logistics, and resource management under simulated emergency conditions.
Building a More Resilient Bohol
Beyond testing emergency response procedures, the activity helped identify operational gaps and areas that require further improvement before an actual disaster occurs. Strengthening coordination among agencies and ensuring that responders can efficiently manage personnel and resources are essential to protecting communities during mass casualty emergencies. The initiative supports the Provincial Government of Bohol, led by Gov. Aris Aumentado, in advancing the province’s Strategic Governance Roadmap while reinforcing Bohol’s commitment to disaster resilience, community safety, and the protection of its natural heritage as the Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark.
