ILOILO — The Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office is rallying every Ilonggo to join the Limpyo Iloilo campaign. The province-wide initiative encourages residents to adopt the 4S strategy to combat dengue and practice proper waste management to prevent flooding.
A Campaign for Community Protection
The program, titled "Panglimpyo para sa Dengue kag Baha," addresses two pressing threats facing communities. Dengue outbreaks remain a constant concern, especially during unpredictable weather patterns. Flooding, often worsened by clogged waterways, poses another significant risk to safety and property.
The campaign emphasizes that community action is the most effective defense. By working together, residents can eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and keep drainage systems clear. The Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office is leading this concerted effort to build safer, healthier neighborhoods.
The 4S Strategy Explained
The core of the campaign revolves around the 4S strategy against dengue. The first S stands for Search and Destroy, which involves finding and eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed. Residents are urged to inspect their homes and surroundings regularly for potential breeding sites.
The second S is Secure Self-Protection. Wearing light-colored long sleeves, pants, and socks can reduce mosquito bites. Applying insect repellents containing DEET adds another layer of defense, especially during peak mosquito hours.
The third S is Seek Early Consultation. Anyone experiencing fever for two consecutive days should immediately consult the nearest health center. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing dengue cases effectively.
The fourth S is Support Fogging or Spraying. This measure should be targeted in identified hotspot areas experiencing dengue surges. Community cooperation ensures that these operations are effective and timely.
Sustaining Cleanliness to Prevent Floods
Beyond dengue prevention, the campaign adds a crucial "+S" for flood mitigation. Sustain Proper Solid Waste Management is emphasized as a daily practice. Keeping estuaries, creeks, canals, and rivers free from garbage prevents clogging.
Roadsides and areas around the house must also be kept clean. Proper waste disposal ensures that drainage systems function efficiently, especially during heavy rains. This simple habit can significantly reduce the risk of flood-related damage.
The 4 O'Clock Habit
To instill consistency, the campaign introduces the "4 O'clock Habit" every Monday. Known as "Kada Lunes nga Lihok Kontra Lamok," it encourages residents to set aside time at 4:00 PM to inspect and clean their surroundings.
This dedicated weekly practice turns dengue prevention into a routine. It makes environmental cleanliness a shared community responsibility. The habit reinforces the message that small, consistent actions can yield significant results.
