Bringing Geoeducation Closer to Boholano Students
BOHOL - Bohol is strengthening its efforts to promote geoeducation by engaging schools and young learners in protecting and understanding the province's geological and cultural heritage through the 4GEON Project. The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), through the Bohol Island UNESCO Global Geopark (BIUGGp), in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd)-Bohol and the international 4GEON network, conducted the 4GEON Project Symposium and the 1st Bohol Geoschools and 4GEON Club Awards on September 1, 2026, at the Ceremonial Hall. The activity highlighted how schools can serve as platforms for introducing students to geoscience, Earth heritage, environmental protection, and the importance of preserving the places and communities around them.
Schools and Young Earth Stewards Take the Lead
Governor Aris Aumentado expressed his appreciation for the international support extended to Bohol and recognized the active participation of DepEd-Bohol and students in the program. Chief of Staff Atty. Filipina Asoy-Piollo also emphasized the importance of international cooperation and local action in protecting natural and cultural heritage, describing young participants as “young Earth stewards” who can already contribute to environmental protection today. The awards recognized schools, teachers, and students who developed creative approaches to geoeducation, sustainability, heritage storytelling, community engagement, and digital advocacy.
Building a Stronger Culture of Heritage Protection
For Bohol, strengthening geoeducation goes beyond teaching students about rocks, landscapes, and geological formations. As a UNESCO Global Geopark, the province also carries the responsibility of helping communities understand and participate in protecting its natural and cultural heritage. Through Geoschools and 4GEON Clubs, students can explore geological sites, local landscapes, cultural traditions, and environmental challenges while developing creative ways to communicate what they learn.
