MARIBOJOC, BOHOL — The Department of Public Works and Highways has assured residents that Bato Bridge in Barangay Cabawan remains structurally safe following the collapse of a section of its approach. The incident forced authorities to temporarily close the bridge to vehicular traffic earlier this week. DPWH immediately mobilized heavy equipment and maintenance personnel to address the settlement.
A technical team assessed the affected area and found that the bridge structure itself sustained no damage. The agency confirmed that the limestone fill serving as the bridge's access road gave way after underlying soil eroded. The bridge, which was completed in late 2025 to improve connectivity among communities in western Bohol, remains intact.
Round-the-Clock Repairs at No Government Cost
The DPWH Bohol 1st District Engineering Office is working closely with the project contractor to carry out round-the-clock repair operations. The work includes the removal and replacement of damaged slope protection structures and bridge link slabs. The objective is to restore safe passage for motorists and residents as quickly as possible.
All repair works will be undertaken and financed entirely by the project contractor, with no additional cost to the government. This arrangement ensures that taxpayer funds are protected while the bridge receives the necessary intervention. The DPWH emphasized that restoration efforts are being expedited and that further updates will be provided as developments arise.
Community Impact and Safety Precautions
The bridge closure has disrupted daily travel in the area, with residents walking approximately half a kilometer from the national highway to reach the damaged section. Many are crossing along the side of the bridge to get to the other end. Motorists have been advised to take alternative routes while repair activities continue.
Residents reported seeing cracks on portions of the bridge approach days before the incident, raising concerns about its condition. The DPWH said it is addressing these issues through the ongoing repairs. No injuries were reported. The agency asked for patience, understanding, and cooperation while the work is completed.
