BOHOL — The Bohol Cultural Center pulsed with rhythm and heart on June 19, 2026 as T‑Mates staged “Panukad,” a fundraising concert to support their journey to the World of Dance Summit 2026. The night celebrated a homegrown crew’s rise from a college friendship to international contenders.
A Dream Taking Flight
The concert’s title, a Visayan word meaning “to take the first step,” captured the essence of the evening. T‑Mates, originally ten schoolmates in 2003, has grown into one of the country’s premier dance crews. Their national championship victory in March propelled them onto a path few local groups ever tread.
Provincial officials, led by Governor Aris Aumentado, threw their full support behind the event. The Bohol Center for Culture and Arts Development and the Bohol Arts and Cultural Heritage Council backed the production. Their presence signaled that Boholano talent is a priority worthy of institutional investment.
The Story of Miguel
“Panukad” was more than a dance show; it unfolded as a theatrical narrative following Miguel, a young dreamer battling personal and family obstacles in pursuit of his passion. Through movement and music, the audience witnessed a reflection of the dancers’ own struggles and triumphs. The storytelling element added emotional weight to every flip and formation.
The night featured a rich cross‑section of Bohol’s creative community. The Loboc Children’s Choir performed, while Joseph Gara and dance groups like Techno Tronic and Haters United added variety. A highlight was a re‑enactment of T‑Mates’ national‑winning piece, a tarsier‑inspired routine that had bested 48 other crews.
Community Fueling the Fire
A live auction of a painting by Elvin Vitor generated additional travel funds, proving that art begets art. The crew’s managers and choreographers—Earl Bryan Orig, April Jay Banquil, and their team—worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Every peso raised brings the dancers closer to Anaheim, California.
BCCAD Head Emerson Pinos praised the group’s world‑class caliber, particularly their decisive win at the World of Dance Philippines. He noted that the provincial government’s support aligns with a strategic roadmap that nurtures artistic excellence and global opportunities. The collaboration between grassroots talent and government backing created a powerful synergy.
Boholano Pride on the Global Stage
T‑Mates now prepares for the World of Dance Summit from July 7–10, where over 300 teams from 60 countries will compete. Their journey from self‑funded national finals to a globally supported campaign exemplifies the resilience of Boholano artists. The crew’s story, much like the concert’s hero, is one of perseverance against odds.
Governor Aumentado captured the spirit in a message to the group, saying their victory sprang not only from talent but from relentless dedication and unity. He affirmed that discipline and love can make dreams a reality in due time. His words echoed the sentiments of an entire province rallying behind its champions.
The “Panukad” concert ended not with farewells but with a promise. As the dancers packed their bags for the United States, they carried with them the pride of Bohol, the first UNESCO Global Geopark, and a message to the world: Boholano talent knows no bounds.
