Cagayan de oro — The City Government of Cagayan de Oro recently launched a week-long celebration of the 48th National Disability Rights Week, an annual observance dedicated to upholding the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs). Spearheaded by the City Social Welfare and Development – PWD Section and the Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO), the festivities officially began on July 17, 2026, with a solemn mass at the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral. Following the religious service, participants took part in an empowering parade from Gaston Park to the City Hall, symbolizing the visibility and active presence of the PWD sector in local society. This year’s theme, “Rights First, Legislation Forward - Strategic Action for Equal Participation and Inclusive Development,” reflects the ongoing commitment to creating a more accessible and equitable city for all.
Celebrating Inclusion Through Engaging Programs And Collaborative Efforts
The kick-off ceremony at the City Tourism Hall was a vibrant gathering of over 400 members from various PWD organizations across the city. During the program, attendees participated in a spirited dance contest—won by District 1B—alongside a food bazaar, raffle draws, and insightful messages from representatives of the PWD community. Adding a touch of environmental stewardship to the event, the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office distributed 50 narra seedlings, encouraging participants to contribute to the city's greening initiatives. These activities provided a meaningful space for PWDs to showcase their talents and foster stronger social connections within the community.
Sustaining Support Through Targeted Services And Dedicated Advocacy
Beyond the celebratory events, the city government has scheduled a series of essential services to directly benefit the PWD sector throughout the remainder of the week. Upcoming highlights include a PWD Humba cooking contest on July 18 at Barangay 40, and an exclusive medical mission and social pension payout for identified PWDs on July 22 at the City Hall Quadrangle. These initiatives underscore the administration of Mayor Klarex Uy, which continues to prioritize the well-being and inclusion of the PWD sector as a cornerstone of its social development agenda. The week will conclude with a culmination program on July 23, further emphasizing the city's pledge to advocate for a rights-based approach to inclusive development.
