Davao — The Davao Region is undergoing a vibrant transformation as the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) bolsters the development of parks and public open spaces through the "Green, Green, Green" (GGG) program. By providing essential funding for the construction and rehabilitation of recreational areas, this initiative is helping local government units (LGUs) create more livable, sustainable, and well-connected communities. These projects are specifically designed to foster active lifestyles, improve public health, and provide residents with accessible spaces to relax amidst the pressures of urban life.
Strategic Investments in Local Infrastructure
For the 2024 fiscal year, the Davao Region has been implementing seven major GGG projects with a combined allocation of approximately ₱40.7 million, with an additional three projects scheduled for 2025. Davao del Norte has received a significant share of these funds, supporting projects such as a sports facility and public park in Panabo City, alongside the development of a nature park, botanical garden upgrades, and improved pedestrian walkways in Tagum City. Meanwhile, Davao del Sur is utilizing a ₱10 million allocation to construct a new public park in Digos City. These investments are part of a broader national effort to revitalize public spaces, ensuring that infrastructure is not only aesthetic but also functional and accessible for all citizens.
Fostering Active Mobility and Climate Resilience
The GGG program goes beyond mere beautification; it serves as a critical tool for climate action and the promotion of active mobility. By funding projects like bicycle lanes, at-grade pedestrian footpaths, and recreational trails, the program encourages residents to walk and cycle, effectively reducing reliance on motorized transport and decreasing urban pollution. Furthermore, the inclusion of features like shade trees and green landscaping helps mitigate the "urban heat island" effect, creating cooler, more comfortable environments. As the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG-XI) continues to provide technical assistance and monitor these projects, the focus remains on ensuring that these new green spaces meet high quality and sustainability standards.
A Commitment to Future-Ready Communities
With approximately 80% of targeted LGSF projects from 2021 to 2025 now completed, the regional government is already looking ahead to future phases of development. This sustained momentum reflects a collective commitment to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision of a "Bagong Pilipinas," where improved local infrastructure directly contributes to the long-term health and well-being of the Filipino people. As more LGUs prepare detailed engineering designs for upcoming cycles, the Davao Region is positioning itself as a model for how targeted national support can empower local governments to build resilient, vibrant, and people-centered public spaces.
