CEBU — The Daanbantayan District Hospital has officially begun its transformation from a basic infirmary into a Level 1 hospital. Governor Pamela Baricuatro led the groundbreaking ceremony on August 22, 2026, signaling a new era for healthcare access in this northern Cebu town.
A Major Infrastructure Investment
The ₱22.4-million project encompasses a comprehensive upgrade of hospital facilities. It includes the construction of a new outpatient department, pharmacy, dietary building, and linen and laundry services. Additional structures will house ambulance maintenance, hazardous waste storage, and a morgue, significantly expanding the hospital's capacity.
Repairs are also scheduled for the emergency room, laboratory, and radiology sections. A covered walkway will connect the main hospital to the new outpatient facility, improving patient flow. These improvements are designed to create a safer and more efficient environment for both patients and healthcare workers.
From Infirmary to True Hospital
The upgrade is a critical step toward full Level 1 accreditation. Dr. Nikki Catalan, Capitol Piso Health Consultant, noted the hospital's rapid growth from a 10-bed infirmary in June 2025 to its current 22-bed capacity. Level 1 status would enable the facility to perform minor surgeries, a first for the district.
This means residents will no longer need to travel long distances to receive basic surgical care. The expansion will also include dedicated maternity facilities and improved diagnostic services. The goal is to make essential healthcare accessible locally, saving time and money for families.
Fulfilling a Promise
Fourth District Representative Sun Shimura expressed deep gratitude to Governor Baricuatro. He recalled the hospital's difficult past, when even basic supplies like Betadine were sometimes out of stock. The current progress, he said, is a testament to the governor's commitment and a dramatic turnaround within a year.
Rep. Shimura described the accomplishments as "impossible things" made possible. He now eagerly anticipates the day the hospital earns Level 1 classification, allowing it to perform minor operations. This milestone would mark a significant victory for healthcare in the community.
Preparing for Full Operations
The groundbreaking followed a pre-construction conference on August 10. Hospital officials, provincial engineers, and contractor Grand Taishan aligned project schedules to minimize disruptions to daily operations. This careful planning ensures that hospital services continue smoothly throughout construction.
Once all infrastructure, manpower, and equipment requirements are met, the hospital will be well-positioned for its Level 1 upgrade. The project reflects the provincial government's commitment to modernizing healthcare across Cebu. It represents a tangible improvement in the quality of life for Daanbantayan residents.
