TUDELA, Cebu — Twenty families displaced by a devastating landslide in Barangay General, Tudela, are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. The Cebu Provincial Government and the Local Government Unit of Tudela recently broke ground on a P8-million row housing project to provide these families with permanent shelter.
A New Beginning for Displaced Families
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Provincial Board Member Mike Villamor, Tudela Mayor Jojo Solante, and Vice Mayor Lymarne O. Yu. This initiative fulfills Governor Pamela Baricuatro’s earlier commitment to secure relocation housing for the affected residents, ensuring their long-term safety and well-being.
Since Typhoon Agaton struck their upland community in 2022, these families have been enduring harsh conditions in a tent city. They have lived under the constant threat of the elements, waiting for the day when they could finally rebuild their lives in a safe, permanent structure.
From Tent City to Permanent Homes
Sixty-year-old Conchita Lumangtad shared the daily struggles of living in a temporary shelter for over four years. She described how strong winds would tear their tents, forcing them to patch the roof with corrugated iron sheets just to get by, highlighting the deep uncertainty of their situation.
Lumangtad expressed immense joy and gratitude now that the housing project is underway. She thanked local leaders for the unwavering support, noting that finally seeing the construction of their future homes brings them closer to restoring their dignity and peace of mind.
Local Leaders Push for Expansion
Mayor Solante extended his profound gratitude to Governor Baricuatro for the financial assistance that made the project possible. He emphasized that the housing units will provide much-needed relief to the families, offering them a safe and secure environment away from landslide-prone areas.
Recognizing that more work remains, the mayor expressed hope for additional funding to support Phase 2 of the housing initiative. This expansion aims to accommodate other landslide victims who are still residing in the tent city, ensuring that no family is left behind in the recovery process.
Solante also looked forward to another major development: the upcoming groundbreaking of a Smart two-storey, four-classroom school building for Barangay General Primary School. This dual investment highlights a holistic approach to community rebuilding, focusing on both housing and education.
Building a Resilient Community
The construction of these permanent homes is a crucial step in disaster risk reduction, moving vulnerable communities out of high-risk zones. It reflects a proactive local governance strategy that prioritizes the safety and well-being of residents above all else.
As the P8-million project takes shape, it stands as a testament to the power of collaborative governance. By combining provincial resources with local leadership, Tudela is successfully turning a story of tragedy into one of resilience, providing a blueprint for disaster recovery across Cebu.
