CEBU CITY — The Department of Tourism Central Visayas Office successfully concluded its DIVE7 R.E.E.F. Site Assessments in Santa Fe and San Remigio, Cebu, from October 15 to 18, 2026. The fieldwork explored new underwater sites with strong development potential to diversify the dive tourism portfolio.
Charting New Underwater Horizons
The initiative builds upon existing dive offerings in Northern Cebu, carefully evaluating reef conditions and checking areas previously impacted by natural calamities. These thorough evaluations are absolutely essential for mapping out future destination planning and ensuring that any future tourism expansion remains highly viable and attractive to global divers.
Science-Driven Marine Conservation
Marine biologists from the University of San Carlos spearheaded the comprehensive scientific assessments, working alongside key agencies like the DENR, PCG, and BFAR. Their combined expertise ensures that any tourism development is strictly guided by rigorous ecological data and strong conservation principles.
By prioritizing reef health and marine biodiversity, the region aims to protect its fragile ecosystems while simultaneously opening new, sustainable economic opportunities. This science-informed approach guarantees that the growth of dive tourism will not come at the expense of the marine environment's long-term survival and vitality.
Bolstering Local Dive Tourism
The initial findings from the fieldwork will serve as a crucial roadmap for strengthening marine conservation and expanding Central Visayas' underwater portfolio. This expansion is expected to attract more diving enthusiasts from around the world, contributing significantly to the local economy and the broader tourism sector.
Furthermore, the sustainable growth of dive tourism creates valuable livelihood opportunities for host communities in Santa Fe and San Remigio. Local boat operators, expert dive guides, and hospitality businesses stand to benefit immensely as the region solidifies its reputation as a premier, conservation-led diving destination in the Philippines.
This strategic development ensures that the economic benefits of tourism are distributed equitably among coastal residents, fostering a strong sense of community ownership over local marine resources and encouraging active participation in conservation efforts.
A Collaborative Effort for the Seas
The success of the DIVE7 R.E.E.F. assessments highlights the immense power of strong inter-agency collaboration. By uniting marine experts, national government agencies, and dedicated local government units, the project ensures a holistic and unified approach to coastal management and environmental stewardship.
This collective effort is vital for safeguarding marine ecosystems while responsibly promoting sustainable tourism. Moving forward, the collaborative framework established during these assessments will continue to guide future conservation efforts and ensure that Northern Cebu remains a vibrant, healthy marine sanctuary for generations to come.
