DIGOS CITY — The City Government of Digos successfully conducted a comprehensive river clean-up activity on October 24, 2026, at the Digos River in Barangay Zone I. Organized through the City Greening Program, the event highlighted the vital importance of collective responsibility in protecting local waterways.
A Unified Community Effort
Volunteers from various sectors gathered early to remove debris and plastic waste from the riverbanks. This hands-on initiative demonstrated that meaningful environmental stewardship requires active community participation rather than just policy implementation. The collective action served as a powerful reminder of the bayanihan spirit.
The clean-up addressed the immediate need to restore the river's health while also raising awareness about the long-term impacts of pollution. By working side by side, residents witnessed firsthand the volume of waste that threatens marine life and local ecosystems every single day.
Leaders and Stakeholders at the Helm
The activity was graced by Vice Mayor Johari Bana and Punong Barangay Jay Jay E. Medina, who worked alongside their dedicated staff. They were joined by representatives from the City Mayor’s Office under Mayor Josef Fortich Cagas, including City Councilor Liza Maravillas Cagas and members of the 9th City Council.
Demonstrating strong public-private partnership, Tortuga Valley Plantation Incorporated proudly participated in the initiative. The company emphasized that caring for the environment is a shared responsibility, noting that keeping rivers clean protects aquatic life and preserves natural resources for future generations.
Tortuga Valley further noted that their participation is part of a broader commitment to community service. They expressed gratitude to the City Greening Program for organizing the event, reinforcing the idea that private enterprises play a crucial role in supporting local government environmental initiatives.
Youth and Academe in Action
A significant highlight of the clean-up was the enthusiastic participation of the youth. YES-O students from Matti National High School served as energetic Masters of Ceremony, bringing warmth and engaging hosting to the environmental undertaking. Their presence infused the event with youthful optimism.
Meanwhile, dedicated volunteers from Davao del Sur State College actively joined the cleanup drive, working hand in hand with community members. The strong turnout from the academe proves that educational institutions are essential partners in cultivating a culture of environmental awareness and sustainable practices among the youth.
These student volunteers did not just pick up trash; they also learned about the importance of proper waste segregation and watershed protection. Such immersive experiences are invaluable in shaping them into responsible future leaders who will continue to champion environmental causes in their respective fields.
Sustaining the Environmental Momentum
Organizers stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum beyond a single weekend. By practicing responsible waste management daily, residents can safeguard the environment for present and future generations. The city aims to inspire ongoing action for a healthier and greener community.
The successful turnout reflects a unified commitment to the community’s well-being. Through consistent collaborative efforts, Digos City moves closer to its vision of a sustainable future. The local government continues to encourage residents to treat every Saturday as an opportunity to serve the planet.
