DAVAO CITY — As the Southwest Monsoon brought heavy rains over the Davao Region, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office XI swiftly mobilized over ₱172 million worth of aid to support hundreds of affected families. The response showcased the agency’s readiness and the community’s enduring spirit of bayanihan.
Preparedness in Action
When the Habagat intensified in early July, DSWD XI acted immediately to ensure that no family would go hungry or unsheltered. By July 9, the agency had prepositioned 181,162 family food packs valued at ₱112.3 million in strategic locations across the region. Non‑food items, including hygiene kits, sleeping materials, and emergency shelter supplies, worth ₱50.7 million were also readied for distribution.
An additional ₱7.1 million in other essential supplies was staged alongside a standby fund of ₱2 million for emergency operations. This layered preparation ensured that relief could flow to barangays as soon as conditions allowed. The agency’s warehouse teams worked around the clock to keep supplies organized and accessible.
Reaching Families Across Ten Barangays
The monsoon affected 719 families—about 2,291 individuals—across ten barangays in three municipalities. As floodwaters rose, local social welfare officers quickly assessed needs and coordinated with DSWD’s regional command center. The first tranche of food packs was dispatched within hours of the initial reports.
Municipalities like Jose Abad Santos received immediate augmentation support, with additional stocks rerouted from nearby hubs. DSWD staff partnered with barangay officials to set up distribution points that were easily accessible to displaced families. The focus was on speed, dignity, and ensuring that no one was left waiting in distress.
Partners Unite for Swift Response
The Habagat response highlighted the strength of inter‑agency coordination.
