DAVAO — Mayor Josef Fortich Cagas met with local butchers bound for Australia on August 19, 2026, delivering a powerful message of pride and purpose. “Make your parents proud of you, make Digos City proud of you,” he told the workers, urging them to carry their training and dedication to their new jobs abroad.
A Promise to Do Digos Proud
The workers, from LuckyStars Manpower Agency, are set to work at Kimberley Meat Company in Western Australia. Mayor Cagas emphasized that their success abroad would not only uplift their families but also honor the city that invested in their skills. He reminded them that genuine service is best reflected through hard work and its positive impact.
“Let our work, let our accomplishments speak for itself,” the Mayor stated. This message underscored a deep belief in the quality of Digoseño training. The workers are among the beneficiaries of the city’s Butchery Program, an initiative designed to equip residents with practical skills for local and overseas employment.
The Butchery Program's Success
The Digos Butchery Program has established the city as a key source of skilled workers for the global meat processing industry. Mindanao cities like Digos are known as prime training grounds, where Australian employers often conduct direct trade testing. The program's success is a testament to the city government's commitment to skills development.
The meeting also tackled a proposed ordinance to institutionalize the Butchery Program. This move aims to ensure its continuity and further strengthen employment generation efforts. Council members Liza M. Cagas, Xymber “King” Latasa, and Michael Latasa joined the discussion, signaling strong legislative support for the initiative.
A Destination Ready for Talent
The workers' destination, Kimberley Meat Company, is the only commercial-scale export-accredited abattoir in northern Western Australia. The facility recently underwent a major corporate transition and is undergoing a massive efficiency upgrade. Its management has scheduled a soft start for late 2026, with full operations in 2027, making the arrival of Digos butchers perfectly timed.
The company, located about 100 kilometers east of Broome, was acquired by a Canadian investment fund for roughly $55 million. This new chapter represents a significant opportunity for the incoming workers. Their skills will be vital as the company staffs up for its expanded operations.
Sustaining the Momentum
The engagement highlights the city government's ongoing commitment to investing in its people. By equipping residents with marketable skills, Digos creates pathways to better livelihoods. The Mayor's send-off was a moment of encouragement, reinforcing the bond between the city and its citizens abroad.
The city also welcomed other individuals and organizations seeking coordination and assistance. This open-door approach demonstrates a proactive local government dedicated to creating opportunities. The butchers now carry with them not just their tools, but the pride of an entire city.
