DAVAO CITY — Davao City tourism officials are actively pivoting toward the lucrative business leisure market to sustain the region's tourism momentum and mitigate the impending effects of El Niño. This strategic move aims to stabilize visitor arrivals during periods typically vulnerable to climate disruptions, ensuring steady economic activity for local stakeholders.
Targeting the Business Leisure Niche
Department of Tourism Regional Director Tanya R. Rabat-Tan emphasized that business leisure activities present massive opportunities for the region. By aggressively tapping into this lucrative market, Davao can effectively counter the economic challenges posed by the weather phenomenon, which frequently occurs outside the traditional summer peak season.
Business leisure, commonly known as BLeisure, merges business travel with immersive leisure experiences. This includes incentive travel, where corporations generously reward top-performing employees and sales teams with all-expenses-paid vacations to popular destinations. Davao is actively strengthening its capacity to host these high-value travelers.
Leveraging World-Class Facilities
Davao City boasts a wide array of facilities and attractions that make it highly capable of hosting business leisure travelers. Rabat-Tan noted that the city already has established conventions and exhibits, making it an ideal and well-equipped hub for large-scale corporate events, trade shows, and international gatherings.
To maximize this potential, the tourism office plans to collaborate closely with local tour operators. They intend to pair these operators with counterparts from other regions to aggressively promote incentive travel, showcasing Davao as a premier MICE destination in the country.
Extending Stays Through Local Attractions
During the Third Hospitality and Tourism Experience Conference, City Tourism Operations Office OIC Willenito Tormis highlighted Davao's distinct advantages. A key strategy involves encouraging business travelers to extend their stays to explore the city's rich offerings beyond the typical boardroom setting, turning work trips into memorable vacations.
Tormis cited the city's countryside, cultural landmarks, food destinations, and agricultural tourism sites as major draws. By promoting these unique experiences, the city aims to convert short business trips into extended leisure vacations, significantly boosting local tourism revenue and supporting community-based enterprises.
MICE as a Major Economic Driver
The strategy is already yielding impressive results for the local economy. Out of the 1.5 million tourist arrivals recorded this year as of August 2026, a large segment was driven by the MICE sector. This demonstrates the immense economic power of business tourism and its vital role in driving local commerce.
By focusing on corporate meetings and incentive travel, Davao effectively addresses the lean seasons and climate-related challenges. Expanding this specific market ensures a steady stream of high-spending visitors who support local businesses, hotels, and transport services year-round, creating a resilient tourism ecosystem.
