DAVAO CITY — The Southern Philippines Medical Center Kidney and Transplant Institute (SKTI) is set to open its highly anticipated new dialysis center this month. Located on the ground floor of the new SKTI building along Dumanlas Road, the facility aims to drastically improve local healthcare access.

A Massive Expansion of Kidney Care

Featuring 100 new dialysis machines, it will be the largest facility of its kind in the region. This massive addition supplements the existing 55 machines currently operating at the SPMC. Furthermore, the building houses an additional 33 machines in upper-level suites.

Dr. Maria Theresa Bad-ang, head of the SKTI, emphasized that the expansion is vital for managing the growing number of patients. Currently, the SPMC caters to 300 patients on dialysis, and the new machines will significantly reduce waiting times.

Public-Private Partnership Delivers World-Class Machines

The realization of this state-of-the-art center was made possible through a Public-Private Partnership between SPMC and Variance Trading Corporation. This collaboration secured the installation of modern German-made B. Braun dialysis machines, ensuring patients receive top-tier treatment.

The impressive facility was constructed with a budget of P1 billion and was officially inaugurated on November 28, 2025. By providing high-quality equipment, the institute guarantees that more patients can start their life-saving dialysis treatments promptly and safely.

"With the additional machines, the SPMC can receive more patients once they start on dialysis, giving quality and at the same time service," Bad-ang added, highlighting the hospital's commitment to expanding its capacity for critical kidney care services.

Financial Relief for Transplant Patients

Beyond expanding dialysis services, the SKTI currently averages two to four kidney transplants every month. Through the PhilHealth Z benefit package, transplant patients can now avail of free post-transplant medications, lifting a massive financial burden off their shoulders.

Dr. Bad-ang noted that patients typically spend P40,000 to P50,000 monthly on these essential medicines. However, with PhilHealth covering the costs along with P10,000 worth of free monthly laboratories, patients are heavily incentivized to adhere to their treatments.

The free medicines directly address the hesitancy of many transplant patients who fear the long-term financial strain. This comprehensive support system ensures better health outcomes and peace of mind for patients recovering from complex and often expensive medical procedures.

Boosting Davao’s Healthcare Capacity

The opening of this mega-dialysis center represents a monumental leap in Davao City’s medical infrastructure. By integrating advanced technology with accessible public health benefits, the city reinforces its commitment to providing quality and inclusive healthcare for its residents.
