Negros Oriental is taking steps toward building a stronger and more sustainable bamboo industry as government agencies, academic institutions, bamboo-based enterprises, designers, and other stakeholders work together to develop the sector. The Negros Oriental Bamboo Industry Development Council (NOBIDC) recently convened its regular meeting on August 13, 2026, at the 3rd Floor Conference Room of the DTI Negros Oriental Provincial Office in Dumaguete City. The gathering brought together key stakeholders committed to strengthening the province's bamboo industry and creating greater opportunities across the bamboo value chain.
Bringing Stakeholders Together
The NOBIDC meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration in developing the province's bamboo sector. Representatives from government agencies, academe, bamboo-based enterprises, designers, and other industry stakeholders came together to discuss strategies and initiatives that can support the industry's continued growth. By connecting different sectors, the Council can help encourage knowledge-sharing, innovation, enterprise development, and coordinated programs that benefit bamboo producers and businesses throughout Negros Oriental.
Strengthening the Bamboo Value Chain
One of the key priorities discussed during the meeting was the strengthening of the bamboo value chain. This involves supporting the different stages of the industry, from bamboo cultivation and processing to product development, design, marketing, and commercialization. A stronger value chain can help local bamboo enterprises improve their products, reach wider markets, and create more sustainable sources of income for communities involved in the industry.
From Local Resource to Business Opportunity
Bamboo is a versatile and renewable resource with applications ranging from traditional handicrafts to furniture, home décor, construction materials, and other innovative products.
For Negros Oriental, developing the bamboo industry creates opportunities to transform a natural resource into sustainable livelihood and business ventures. With proper skills, product development, and market support, local bamboo products can become competitive offerings while maintaining their connection to the province's craftsmanship and identity.
