MAYORGA, LEYTE — In a unified drive to strengthen coastal resilience and protect local ecosystems, personnel from the Mayorga Municipal Police Station joined local government leaders and barangay officials for a joint mangrove tree planting activity on August 22, 2026. The environmental initiative targeted critical estuary zones across Barangay Union and Barangay Liberty in Mayorga, Leyte.
Multi-Agency Community Collaboration
Under the direct supervision of Police Lieutenant Glenn P. Chavero, Officer-in-Charge of Mayorga MPS, police officers worked alongside Mayor Alexander S. De Paz and municipal department heads. The coastal restoration effort brought together key local agencies and community groups, including:
Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)
Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO)
Sangguniang Bayan (SB) members and local Rural Health Unit (RHU) personnel
Barangay officials and local volunteers from Brgy. Union and Brgy. Liberty
Strengthening Coastal Defenses and Carbon Sequestration
Local organizers highlighted that planting mangroves along estuary areas serves vital ecological and safety functions for Leyte's coastal communities. By establishing natural shoreline barriers, the newly planted mangroves will help prevent coastal erosion, dampen storm surges, and reduce the impact of rising waters during severe weather events. Additionally, the expanded mangrove cover contributes to long-term carbon sequestration, restores breeding grounds for marine life, and enhances regional climate change mitigation efforts.
