GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Five qualified fisherfolk in General Santos City now have additional equipment to support their fishing activities after the City Agriculturist’s Office, in partnership with BFAR, turned over five motorized bancas to beneficiaries. The assistance is practical: a motorized boat can serve as an essential working tool for people whose income depends on reaching fishing areas and bringing catches back to market. Rather than treating livelihood assistance as simply a financial handout, the turnover provides equipment that can be used directly in daily work. For the recipients, these boats represent new working resources that can help them carry out their fishing operations with equipment specifically intended for their livelihood.
Support That Reaches the Fishing Community
The boat distribution comes alongside broader fisheries assistance being provided across General Santos and the SOCCSKSARGEN region. BFAR Region 12 said in May 2026 that qualified fisherfolk could receive a ₱3,000 fuel subsidy, recognizing the pressure that fuel expenses place on fishing operations. A separate July 2026 report from the Philippine Information Agency noted that 1,981 beneficiaries in General Santos City were included in the region’s Presidential Assistance for Farmers and Fisherfolk Program. These programs differ in form, but they share a straightforward purpose: helping people engaged in agriculture and fisheries manage the costs and demands of producing food. The five bancas add another practical tool to that support.
When Livelihood Equipment Also Serves Food Security
A fishing boat is more than a piece of equipment when it is connected to a household’s daily source of income and the wider supply of seafood. General Santos has a major fisheries economy, making the productivity of its fisherfolk relevant beyond individual families. The City Agriculturist’s Office described the banca turnover as part of its continuing commitment to farmers and fisherfolk, while BFAR’s regional programs show that assistance can include equipment, fuel support, and other interventions. The latest turnover therefore offers a simple but meaningful story: five fishing households have gained an additional resource for their work, while the city continues investing in people who help keep seafood moving from the water to consumers.
