A Table Setup That Earned the Top Spot

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - A carefully arranged table became the stage for a notable achievement by learners of General Santos City SPED Integrated School–Quezon Avenue Campus. Entry No. 6 captured the championship in the Table Skirting competition at the Tuna Skills Olympics 2026, with Nashon Glenn E. Henares, Sofia Vindy G. Buslon, and Shandy Rose Dy representing the school. Their performance involved more than making a table look presentable. Table skirting calls for careful preparation, coordination, neatness, and attention to arrangement. The result gave the three learners an opportunity to demonstrate practical abilities in a competitive setting while showing that skills-based activities can open meaningful spaces for SPED learners.

Practical Skills Take Center Stage

The Tuna Festival Skills Olympics has traditionally brought students together for competitions connected with hospitality, food service, and related technical abilities. The 19th edition was held on September 4, 2026, at Robinsons Gensan, according to Brokenshire College, which also participated in the competition. Against that backdrop, the SPED learners’ Table Skirting victory stands out for the very practical nature of the task. Preparing an organized table requires following steps, handling materials, working with others, and producing a finished presentation. These are useful abilities that can be practiced in school and potentially carried into future training, employment, household responsibilities, or community activities.

Achievement With a Bigger Meaning

For General Santos City SPED Integrated School, the result adds another encouraging example of learners being given opportunities to demonstrate what they can do. DepEd’s 2026 records identify General Santos City SPED Integrated School as an operating public school in the city, while the department has also highlighted the achievements of SPED learners and graduates as examples of education opening pathways despite individual challenges. The Table Skirting championship therefore deserves attention not simply because a team won, but because the competition provided a space where practical ability could be seen, assessed, and celebrated. Henares, Buslon, and Dy’s accomplishment gives that message a particularly concrete form.
