GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Volleyball is giving young athletes from General Santos City a reason to keep looking forward. Notre Dame of Dadiangas University’s girls are set to compete in the Rebisco Volleyball League Division I National Finals, a five-day tournament scheduled from September 14 to 18 at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong. The team is among 16 squads competing in the event, which features some of the country’s top under-18 players. Their appearance places a Gensan school among a national field and gives the young athletes an opportunity to test themselves against teams from other parts of the Philippines. For these students, every rally now carries the excitement of a bigger stage.
Finding Strength After a Difficult Season
The timing makes the team’s journey particularly meaningful for its players and coaches. NDDU coach Alvin Francis Ambe told The Philippine Star that the earthquake caused heavy damage to school buildings in General Santos City, affecting the community only months before the national competition. Against that backdrop, he described the Rebisco Volleyball League as providing hope and relief while the city works toward ordinary routines again. The story does not suggest that volleyball erases the difficulties caused by the disaster; instead, it shows how sport can give young people something constructive to concentrate on. Training, teamwork and competition can offer moments of normalcy when life around them has changed.
GenSan Talent Gets a Bigger Spotlight
NDDU’s place in the national finals also adds another chapter to General Santos City’s growing youth-volleyball story. The school has previously represented Central Mindanao in the Rebisco Volleyball League, winning the regional championship in 2024 after defeating St. Alexius College in a closely contested final. The league has been described as a platform for provincial teams to compete beyond their usual regional competitions, giving young players opportunities to measure their skills nationally. This year, the NDDU girls return to that larger arena with another chance to learn, compete and represent their city. Their journey is a reminder that promising sports careers can begin on a school court in General Santos.
