ILOILO — The city government's commitment to environmental sustainability has earned multiple recognitions from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Region VI. The awards were presented during the Solid Waste Management and Extended Producer Responsibility Summit on August 19, 2026.
A Sweep of Environmental Excellence
The recognitions highlight the collective efforts of the City General Services Office (GSO) and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in advancing responsible waste management. The awards validate Iloilo City's leadership in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices. The event took place at Diversion 21 Hotel in Mandurriao.
Five Key Areas of Recognition
The city was commended across five critical environmental areas. First, for active participation in the National Plan of Action on Marine Litter, preventing plastics from reaching waterways. Second, for achieving 100 percent online compliance with the Self-Compliance Monitoring and Auditing Report for 2024 and 2025.
Third, for the effective operationalization of government-funded waste management equipment and facilities. Fourth, for outstanding social inclusion and circular economy practices through the Uswag Calajunan Livelihood Association, Inc. (UCLA). Fifth, a Plaque of Recognition in partnership with Tetra Pak for sustainable waste diversion.
Empowering Communities Through Recycling
A key highlight was the recognition of the UCLA's role in local waste diversion. The integration of this community association creates sustainable jobs while reducing the burden on landfills. This approach demonstrates how environmental goals and social upliftment can go hand in hand.
The partnership with Tetra Pak also underscores the value of private sector collaboration. By converting post-consumer packaging waste into reusable resources, the city is pioneering innovative recycling solutions. These initiatives position Iloilo City as a model for circular economy practices in the region.
A Shared Victory for All Ilonggos
The city government extended congratulations to its offices, community partners, and every Ilonggo. The achievements are a testament to the power of collective action and shared responsibility. The local leadership emphasized that the awards belong to the entire community.
This collective effort is turning vision into action. The recognitions serve as motivation to continue building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Iloilo City. The focus remains on sustainability for future generations.
A Model for Sustainable Urban Living
These awards reinforce Iloilo City's reputation as a leader in environmental governance. They demonstrate that a city can achieve economic growth while prioritizing ecological health. The accomplishments set a high standard for other local governments to follow.
