ILOILO — Residents of Iloilo, particularly senior citizens, can now enjoy a dedicated exercise facility at the newly inaugurated Jaro Plaza. The project, launched on October 22, 2026, reinforces the local government's commitment to making health and wellness highly accessible through improved public spaces.
A Milestone for Community Wellness
Mayor Raisa Treñas led the formal inauguration ceremony, joined by city officials and community members. She emphasized the vital importance of integrating health initiatives directly into the city's infrastructure development plans. The new facility offers a safe, accessible venue for residents to engage in physical activities.
This development forms part of the city's continuing program to upgrade public plazas. It ensures that wellness activities are no longer confined to gyms but are brought closer to the community. The initiative specifically addresses the long-standing need for outdoor fitness options for the elderly and active citizens alike.
Prioritizing Health Through Infrastructure
During her speech, Mayor Treñas underscored that public infrastructure must directly contribute to the welfare of the people. She reiterated that health and wellness remain the top priority for the city government, justifying the significant investments in these public recreational areas.
"For me, the priority is the health and wellness of everyone. What is all our infrastructure for if the bodies of our residents are not healthy?" she stated. The local government believes that a physically active community leads to a more productive, happier, and highly resilient society overall.
Expanding Facilities Across the City
Following the success of the Jaro Plaza project, similar exercise facilities are now being planned and installed in other major public plazas. The city government is currently working on adding these amenities at Plaza Libertad and in the La Paz district.
Additionally, rehabilitation efforts continue in Mandurriao Plaza to further enhance its features. The city also plans to bring regular activities like yoga, Zumba, and Tai Chi to these spaces. These programs encourage a highly active lifestyle among diverse age groups.
A Gift from the Uy Family
The newly installed equipment was made possible through a generous donation from the Uy Family. Representing the family, Walter Uy expressed strong support for projects that improve public spaces and encourage healthier lifestyles among the residents of Iloilo.
Uy also shared that his family is considering providing additional recreational facilities specifically designed for children in the future. The local government extended its profound gratitude to the private sector partners, noting that such collaborations are vital for continuous community development.
City Architect Regina Gregorio described the facility as a valuable investment in the community's well-being. She noted that the equipment represents a firm commitment to the health and quality of life of both the senior citizens and the youth in the city.
